LAKE CHARLES --
Brittane Gaines led a group of four HBU women who won individual events Friday to help the Huskies capture the team title, and
Matt Perri smashed his own school record in the mile at the McNeese JDB Challenge indoor track and field meet.
Gaines overcame a slip at the start to power to a 7.21 in the 55-meter dash, while freshman
Lakesha Cameron won her first collegiate title with a 26.51 in the 200.
Jessica Whitt, last week's Great West Conference athlete of the week, easily won the 800 in 2:19.87, and
Kourtney Lofton took top honors in the 55-meters hurdles at 8.59.
Perri ran in a special mile section that featured many of the top Southland Conference middle-distance men, and he came away with his first sub-4:10 clocking to finish third in 4:09.68.
"It is always a thrill to win a meet," said head coach
Theresa Fuqua. "We had so many good competitive performances today, it is hard to single anyone out. Across the board we showed better quality and depth than we have in the past two meets and it is exciting to watch our younger athletes develop."
HBU tallied 116 points in the women's competition to top host McNeese State, while the men finished fifth.
Anthony Aguinaga won the 800 with a season-best 1:56.58 and
