Alessia Dal Monte, and
Taylor Gibson scored while
Patty Walrath made two saves for her second shutout of the season, as HBU defeated host McNeese State, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Cowgirl Field.
With the win, the Huskies even the all-time series with the Cowgirls at 2-2-2.
Natalie Hager almost gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at the 10:27-mark, as her shot hit the crossbar. Twenty-seven seconds later M. Missimer scored the match's first goal from 25 yards out.
The Huskies maintained the pressure, as
Rebekah Tovar's shot nine minutes later was blocked, resulting in a corner kick. On the ensuing corner kick,
Kelsey Missimer's shot was saved by Cowgirls' netminder Maggie Marks.
The Cowgirls almost tied the match in the 34th minute, as Krista Steinbeiser's shot hit the crossbar, but the Huskies were able to clear the rebound out of harm's way.
HBU outshot McNeese State, 12-5, in the opening half, and 5-1 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied at three apiece.
Blake Martin's shot in the 72nd minute hit the post, narrowly giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
In the 73rd minute, Dal Monte subbed in for Tovar. Fifty-three seconds later, Dal Monte scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by
Amina Radoncic, as she scored from the right side of the box.
Four minutes later, Gibson gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead, assisted by
Emily Hughes. Hughes sent a centering pass into the box and Gibson slid and sent the ball past Marks from six yards out.
HBU outshot the Cowgirls, 10-1, in the second half and 22-6 in the match. Walrath improved to 2-2-0. Marks dropped to 3-2-0 as she made nine saves.
HBU (3-8-1, 2-3-0 SLC) will conclude the four-match road trip at Incarnate Word on Oct. 13 at 1 pm.
