KINDER, La. – Houston Baptist University shot combined scores of 280 and 284 to place first, led by sophomore
Jeffrey Merrell, who claimed the individual title in a playoff, at the 2012 Moe O'Brien Intercollegiate at the 7,185 yard, par-72 Koasati Pines resort. HBU had three players finish in the top 10 individually and all five golfers placed in the top 20.
Merrell tied for first in the two-day tournament, posting a 6-under par 66 on day one and a 1-under par 71 in his second round for a combined score of 137, then claimed the championship in a playoff. Freshman
Michael Durio tied for fourth, firing a 2-under par 70 in his second round, giving him a combined score of 141, three strokes under par for the tournament. Junior
Trey Cassity tied for eighth in the tournament, carding an even-par 144 in two days of action. Sophomore
Brandon Wilhide shot a combined score of 146 to tie for 13
th, while sophomore
Andy Ariens finished with a 148 to tie for 19
th.
HBU finished with a winning team score of 564, with Stephen F. Austin finishing 14 strokes behind at 578. Louisiana-Monroe placed third with a score of 581 and McNeese State, the tournament host, finished in fourth at 583.
Merrell tied with SFA's Mitchell McLeroy atop the leaderboard, both finishing 7-under par for the tournament. Michael Killam of MSU finished one stroke behind Merrell and McLeroy to finish alone in third place at a six under-par 138.
The Huskies will travel to Erie, Colo., to compete in the Mark Simpson Invitational hosted by the University of Colorado, Sept. 24-25 at Colorado National Golf Course.
