AUSTIN -- Less than the blink of an eye separated Brittane Gaines from a spot in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Round Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium, as the HBU junior sprinter narrowly missed advancing in the 100 meters.

Gaines, who was ranked =35th coming into this meet, zipped to an 11.66 to place fifth in her heat and 29th overall. The top 27 advanced to Friday's quarterfinal round, and Gaines missed that group by only three-hundredths of a second. The Klein Collins graduate made Husky history by becoming the first HBU athlete to qualify for NCAA postseason competition since the 1980s.

"I wasn't nervous, just excited," said Gaines, the Great West Conference 100 champ and GWC Indoor Athlete of the Year. "It was a huge learning experience for me and I felt honored to be the first person to go to the NCAA's in so long."

Gaines burst out of the blocks and had a slight lead through the 40-meter mark, where the field caught her and then Oregon's English Gardner edged ahead on the way to victory.

"This meet has been something I have been aiming for since I knew we would be eligible this year," Gaines added. "I was happy overall with my performance, but I know next year I can come back and do much better and focus on making it to the national championship meet."
