Baseball Escapes with 12-9 Decision Over Prairie View A&M

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Houston Baptist jumped out to a 12-0 lead, but Prairie View A&M scored four runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh to make the Huskies sweat out a 12-9 victory Tuesday afternoon at Panther Field.
 
Senior leftfielder David Pfuntner went 3-for-6 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run, while junior second baseman Josh Foust wetn 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs for the Huskies (7-15). Senior catcher Asai Adame went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs, while senior rightfielder Kolby Arnst went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
 
Brad Benes went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs, while Sterling Smith went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs for the Panthers (18-11). Brandon Brooks went 3-for-5 with a double, and Robert Cossey went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Evan Richard doubled and drove in a pair of runs.
 
Freshman Curtis Jones (2-3) picked up the win for HBU, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five in 5.2 innings. Sophomore Kobie Hajdik earned his second save of the season, getting two strikeouts, while allowing a walk in the ninth. Sean Hollis (1-3) took the loss for Prairie View A&M, surrendering eight runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings. DeLeon Boyd allowed four unearned runs, walking four and allowing two hits in three hits in three innings.
 
The Huskies scored a run in the first when senior shortstop Collin Hetler doubled and scored on Jones' sacrifice fly. HBU tacked on two more in the second as junior centerfielder Jake Gonzalez led off with a double and Foust walked. After sophomore Tanner Kalina grounded into a double play, Adame delivered an RBI single and Pfunter followed with an RBI double to leftcenter.
 
HBU seemed to break open the game with a five spot in the third. Arnst and sophomore first baseman Bradley Brown led off with back-to-back singles, and Jones laid down a sacrifice bunt. Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Foust drove in two with a single through the left side. Adame plated two more with a double to leftcenter, and Pfunter capped the inning with an RBI single for an 8-0 lead.
 
Pfuntner reached on an error to lead off the sixth, then Hetler walked and Arnst was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brown walked to drive in a run. Foust smacked another two-run single, then freshman Samm Wiggins drew a bases-loaded, pinch-hit walk to make the score, 12-0.
 
Prairie View A&M answered back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. After Jones got two quick outs, Benes smashed a solo homer to right. Dominiq Harris and Cossey had back-to-back singles, then scored on Richard's double to rightcenter. Richard came home on Smith's double to rightcenter to cut the deficit to 12-4.
 
James Fontenot was hit by a pitch with one out in the second, and came home on a triple by Michael Long. Benes then delivered an RBI single and Harris was hit by a pitch. Smith drove in a pair with a single to right to make the score 12-9, but senior Michael Schulle struck out Andre Oliver to end the threat.
 
The Huskies begin Great West Conference play when they host Chicago State in a four-game series Thursday through Saturday at Husky Field. Thursday's game begins at 2 p.m., followed by a noon doubleheader Friday and a 2 p.m. game Saturday.
