Baseball Falls to Sam Houston State, 8-3

Sophomore Kobie Hajdik allowed just two unearned runs and struck out four in five innings of relief against Sam Houston State Tuesday.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State scored six runs in the fourth inning to down Houston Baptist, 8-3, Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
 
Senior rightfielder Kolby Arnst doubled and drove in a run, while freshman shortstop Curtis Jones and sophomore third baseman Tanner Kalina drove in the other Husky runs. Freshman catcher Samm Wiggins extended his hitting streak to six games with a single for the HBU (15-23).
 
Corey Toups went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Jake Arrington tripled and drove in two runs for Sam Houston State (29-11). Luke Plucheck also tripled, drove in a run and scored twice for the Bearkats.
 
Michael Oros (6-0) earned the win for Sam Houston State, holding the Huskies to one hit and striking out seven in five innings. Freshman Chad Valcoviak (0-2) took the loss for HBU, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits in three innings. Sophomore Kobie Hajdik pitched the final five innings for the Huskies, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and striking out four.
 
Sam Houston State only got a single from Toups but scored a pair of runs in the second, both on wild pitches. The Bearkats then scored six in the fourth as Kevin Miller led of with a single and Plucheck followed with a triple. Shea Pierce and Jessie Plumlee then followed with back-to-back doubles, and Arrington capped the rally with a two-run triple.
 
Hajdik then shut the Bearkats down, allowing only three hits, the rest of the way.
 
The Huskies got on the board in the sixth as junior centerfielder Jake Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice after Arnst walked, then stole second and scored on a single by Jones. Junior second baseman Josh Foust walked and scored on Arnst's double in the eighth, then senior first baseman Asai Adame scored on Kalina's fielder's choice groundout in the ninth.
 
The Huskies return to action in a four-game Great West Conference series against the New York Institute of Technology Friday through Sunday in Old Westbury, N.Y.
