HOUSTON – Houston Baptist was shut out for the third-straight game and could only muster two hits, as the Huskies fell to visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-0, at a full house at Husky Field Saturday afternoon.
The Islanders scored single runs in the top of the second, fifth and seventh innings for the victory.
Meagan McKinney led off the top of the second with a single to right field. After advancing to second following a groundout, she crossed home on an RBI double by Hayley Galloway.
In the top of the fifth, after two quick outs, Sandy Schumann hit a two-out single to center. Following a walk that placed Schumann in scoring position, she scored after an RBI double by Alejia Cain.
Similar to the fifth inning, following two quick outs, Schumann kept the inning alive on a Husky error. She came all the way from first to score after an RBI double by pinch-hitter Lauren Phillips to make it 3-0 Islanders.
HBU had a chance to do some damage in the bottom of the seventh, as the Huskies had runners at first and second with two outs, but the Islanders ended the game on a fielder's choice.
Kate Maddock and
Mac Christensen each had a hit for HBU.
Beth Evans started the game and took the loss, giving up five hits and one earned run while striking out one in 2.0 innings.
Keely Shuler pitched the remaining 5.0 innings and gave up six hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out one.
Galloway led TAMU-Corpus Christi at the plate, going 3-for-3. Hannah Schwarz and Schumann each had two hits. The Islanders used four pitchers on the day, with Greta Cecchetti earning the win (2.0 IP, 1 SO) and Constance Brandenburg earning her first save (1.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 BB).
Following the game, HBU softball alumni were recognized on the field, then there was a historical acknowledgement following the announcing of all the alumni in attendance. Sherry Blakely (Key) had her #6 retired in a special ceremony, becoming the first HBU student-athlete to ever have her number retired.
