Baseball Hammers Northern Colorado, 17-5, to Split Doubleheader

Huskies record season-high 22 hits in game two rout.

Freshman catcher Samm Wiggins had two hits in each game, reached safely six times on the day and drove in three runs in the Huskies' 17-5 victory in game two against Northern Colorado Saturday.

GREELEY, Colo. – Houston Baptist pounded out a season-high 22 hits and drew six walks as the Huskies cruised past Northern Colorado, 17-5, to run-rule the Bears in eight innings in the second game of a Great West Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field. The teams split on the day as the Bears won the first game, 5-3.
 
In the second game, each Husky starter had at least two hits and scored a run – the fourth time this season every starter has hit safely. Junior centerfielder Jake Gonzalez led the way, going 3-for-5 with a double, five RBIs and two runs. Junior second baseman Josh Foust went 4-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and three runs, while senior rightfielder Kolby Arnst went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs for HBU (15-21, 7-4 GWC). Freshman catcher Samm Wiggins went 2-for-3, drew a pair of walks, drove in three runs and scored a pair, while senior first baseman Asai Adame went 3-for-6 with a double, three runs and an RBI.
 
Senior leftfielder David Pfuntner went 2-for-4, walked twice, scored twice and drove in a run, and freshman shortstop Curtis Jones had a pair of singles and scored a run. Sophomore designated hitter Judson Bartlett went 2-for-5 and scored a run, while sophomore third baseman Tanner Kalina went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
 
Colby Harrison went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run for Northern Colorado (15-21, 6-5). Taylor Anderson singled, drove in a run and scored one for the Bears.
 
Freshman righthander Ross Kennell (4-2) got the win for the Huskies, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits in six innings, while senior Michael Schulle and sophomore Kobie Hajdik each pitched a scoreless inning. Nate Steinmetz (2-5) took the loss for Northern Colorado, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings. Reliever Keven Willman gave up five runs on six hits, and Eian Raber gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits in just one-third of an inning.
 
Northern Colorado struck first as Anderson drew a leadoff walk and Harrison doubled to leftcenter. Anderson scored on a wild pitch, then Eric Ferguson was hit by a pitch. Derek Baum smacked an RBI single to center, and after a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Yamane moved the runners into scoring position, Ferguson scored on a passed ball to put the Bears up, 3-0.
 
HBU answered right back with three of its own in the top of the third. Pfuntner led off with a single, then Foust blasted a doubled down the leftfield line. Arnst drove them in with a single up the middle, then he scored the tying run on an RBI single by Gonzalez.
 
The Bears quickly retook the lead in the bottom of the inning, when Adrian Schenk drew a one-out walk, stole second, advanced to third and scored on a triple by Harrison.
 
HBU erupted for five runs in the fifth, four of them coming with two outs. Foust led off the inning with a single to right, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Arnst, then scored on a single through the left side by Gonzalez to tie the game. After Jones struck out for the second out, Adame singled, Bartlett was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Steinmetz came out of the game. Reliever Jay Johnson walked Wiggins to plate the go-ahead run, then Adame scored on a wild pitch. Kalina walked to load the bases, then Pfuntner drew a walk to bring in another run as Johnson was lifted. Foust singled to left to cap the rally and give the Huskies an 8-4 lead.
 
Northern Colorado picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the inning as Adam Hilker drew a leadoff walk, and Jensen Park reached on catcher's interference on what would have been a double play groundout. Schenk followed by grounding into a double play, but Anderson delivered an RBI single to center to cut the Bears' deficit to 8-5.
 
Jones, Adame and Bartlett slapped consecutive singles to the left side to load the bases with one out in the sixth. Wiggins drew another RBI walk, and Kalina lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make the score, 10-5. Pfuntner drew a walk to load the bases, but Foust flied out deep to left to end the inning.
 
The Huskies piled on seven runs in the top of the eighth to put the game away. Adame led off with a double down the rightfield line, then went to third on a groudout by Bartlett. HBU then strung together five-straight singles by Wiggins, Kalina, Pfuntner, Foust and Arnst to score a pair of runs and load the bases. Gonzalez unloaded them with a double to the gap in leftcenter. After Jones singled to put runners on the corners, Adame reached on an error, which allowed Gonzalez to score and cap the rally and the scoring for a 17-5 lead.
 
In the first game, Wiggins went 2-for-3 for the Huskies. Bartlett tripled and drove in two runs, while Jones singled and drove in the other run.
 
Park singled and drove in two runs for the Bears, while Casey Coy doubled, drove in a run and scored two. Baum doubled and drove in a run.
 
Chris Hammer (4-1) earned the victory for Northern Colorado, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out six in seven innings. Freshman Tyler Hoelscher (1-4) took the loss for HBU, giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits, striking out three and walking three in six innings.
 
Northern Colorado jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first. Yamane and Coy drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning, then moved up on a wild pitch. Yamane scored on Hilker's sacrifice fly and Coy came home on a single to right by Schenk to put the Bears ahead. Northern Colorado added an unearned run in the bottom of the third as Yamane led off with a single to center, a balk and an error moved him to third, and he scored on Hilker's sacrifice fly to put the Bears ahead, 3-0.
 
Pfuntner, Arnst and Gonzalez led off with consecutive singles to load the bases to lead off the top of the fourth. Jones got the Huskies on the board with an RBI groundout, and after Adame struck out for the second out, Bartlett ripped a triple to the rightcenter field gap to tie the game, 3-3.
 
The Bears regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Anderson singled and scored on Baum's doubled down the leftfield line. After Yamane walked, Coy followed with an RBI double to rightcenter to make the score, 5-3.
 
The series concludes with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT.
