HOUSTON – For the third time this season, all nine Houston Baptist starters recorded a hit, and the Huskies rode a six-run second inning to a 10-2 victory over crosstown rival Texas Southern Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.

Freshman shortstop Curtis Jones went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while sophomore first baseman Bradley Brown went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs for the Huskies (12-15), who have won six in a row. Senior designated hitter Asai Adame went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run, senior rightfielder Kolby Arnst went 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs. Freshman catcher Samm Wiggins and freshman third baseman Josh Martinez each scored a pair of runs. Junior centerfielder Jake Gonzalez singled to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

Five different players had singles for the Tigers (15-17), while Anthony Flenoy and Jose Flores provided the RBIs.

Senior righthander Michael Schulle (2-2) earned the win for HBU, allowing one run on three hits in six innings. Freshman Chad Valcoviak gave up a run on two hits in two innings, and sophomore Kobie Hajdik allowed a only a walk in the ninth. Michael Starkey (1-3) took the loss for Texas Southern, giving up seven runs, four earned, on eight hits in two innings, as the Tigers used six pitchers in the game.

HBU struck first as Arnst ripped a two-out triple to right-center and Brown followed with a single to left to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead after one inning. Texas Southern answered back to tie the game in the top of the second as Tyler Flanagan led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Jose Flores' two-out single to right.

The Huskies broke the game open in the bottom of the frame, however, sending 10 batters to the plate and piling on six runs. Gonzalez led off with a single to rightcenter, then was picked off. Wiggins walked, then scored on sophomore leftfielder Judson Bartlett's double to rightcenter. Bartlett came home on Martinez's infield single, then Foust was hit by a pitch and Adame singled to left to load the bases. Arnst drove in a run by reaching on a fielder's choice, as Adame was forced out at second, but Brown lifted a two-run double to left when the leftfielder lost the ball in the sun. Jones tacked on an RBI single to make the score, 7-1.

HBU added a run in the fourth as Adame walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on Arnst's RBIs single to left. The Huskies scored to more in the fifth as Wiggins led off with a single, Martinez walked and the runners moved up on a wild pitch. Foust grounded out to score one run, then Adame doubled down the rightfield line to extend the lead to 10-1.

The Tigers scored a run in the seventh when Jackson reached on a two-out single up the middle, went to second on a balk and scored on Flenoy's single up the middle.

The Huskies and Tigers will turn around to complete the home-and-home series Wednesday at 3 p.m. at McGregor Park.
