HOUSTON -- Ideal weather and top-notch competition helped Houston Baptist University track and field athletes set three school records and a slew of personal bests Friday and Saturday at the Rice Victor Lopez Bayou Classic.
Great West Conference cross country champion
Matt Perri got the record-setting going Friday night as he chopped more than 10 seconds off his own HBU standard, clocking 9:17.08 to finish fifth in the 3000-meters steeplechase.
Freshman
Brice Christian knocked .71 off the men's 400 record with his 48.26, the fifth-fastest time of the day and the best mark from the afternoon session. Fellow frosh
David Hicks also had a big season best with a 49.33 to win his heat, while
LaDarien Harris raced to a 49.87, also a 2012 best.
The final record of the weekend came from
Anthony Aguinaga in the 1500. Aguinaga sliced 1.63 seconds off the existing mark with a 3:54.00 that earned him ninth place overall.
Double GWC indoor gold medalist
Jake Adkins heaved a personal-best 15.75 meters/51-8.25 to take fifth in the shot put and added a '12-best 49.60m/162-9 for fifth in the discus.
Indoor GWC 60m champ
Brittane Gaines zipped to an 11.99 to set the fastest time in the afternoon section of the 100, and came back later to team up with
Joslyn Cooper,
Tramisha McGrew and
Skyla Williams to win their heat of the 4x100 relay with a season-best and GWC-leading 46.22.
McGrew closed out the meet with a sterling anchor leg on the 4x400, joining with
Sharonda Bryant,
Zelda Abadom and
Morgan Pressley to finish sixth overall at 3:48.84, the team's best mark of the year by three seconds.
In the women's 1500,
Hiba Kreidie smashed her lifetime best by taking almost 20 seconds off as she finished ninth overall at 4:36.93.
Other top performances came from
Candace Montgomery, who ran a 64.20 in the 400 hurdles, her best time in three years, and
Jade Penick, who added more than a foot to her discus PR with a toss of 39.21m/128-8.
The Huskies will send a pair of women's relays to the Texas Relays Friday, with the bulk of the team heading to San Antonio for the Trinity Invitational.
