HOUSTON -- With a pair of school records, Cassie Juarez won the women's javelin on Friday and the HBU women's 4x200-meters relay raced to victory Saturday to highlight the outdoor track and field opener for the Huskies at the 61st TSU Relays at Durley Field.

Juarez broke her own school record with a 34.03 meters/111-8 effort on Friday at Rice, where the field events were contested. Great West Conference 60m champion Brittane Gaines teamed up with Tramisha McGrew, Skyla Williams and Joslyn Cooper to clock a school-record 1:39.69 and hold off Grambling for the 4x200 title.

Double GWC indoor champion Jake Adkins had a strong showing in Friday's men's throwing events, placing second in the hammer with a GWC-leading 49.29m/161-8, and third in the shot put with a toss of 15.24m/50-0. He added a sixth-place effort in the javelin. On Saturday Jarrett Gilliam returned from shoulder surgery to place second in the discus.

Women's field event action saw Jade Penick take fifth in the hammer and sixth in the discus, with lifetime bests in both events, and Morgan Pressley long jumping to a sixth-place effort.

In individual events on the track Saturday, Jessica Whitt just missed her lifetime best in the 1500 to take second at 4:43.16, while Matt Perri was third in the men's metric mile at 3:56.46. Sharonda Bryant earned a fifth-place finish in the 400 with her 58.14.

Other noteworthy performances on the oval included Jamie Whitt's eighth-place run in the 800, where she finished one spot ahead of teammate Hiba Kreidie. Gabe O'Neale was ninth in the 110 hurdles at 15.64 into a strong wind, and also finished 10th in the 400 hurdles at 57.04. Kourtney Lofton ran a 15.51 to take ninth in the women's 100 hurdles final. In the women's 400H, Candace Montgomery continued her return to full strength with a 65.77 to place seventh.

The Huskies were second in the men's 4x800 on Friday, and added impressive runs in the 4x400's. Bryant was joined by Zelda Abadom, Disa Foster and Pressley in finishing third in the women's race at 3:51.84, the fastest HBU time at this meet since the program was started in 2008. Freshmen David Hicks and Brice Christian teamed up with Junior Malave and LaDarien Harris to drop under 3:20 with a 3:19.53 in sixth, also the best time by the Huskies at the TSU Relays.

In the 4x100 relays, Gaines, Cooper, McGrew and Williams nabbed bronze at 46.72, with the HBU men taking seventh in 42.29. The Huskies were fourth in the men's 4x200.

HBU takes to the track again next weekend at the Rice Victor Lopez Bayou Classic on Friday and Saturday.
