Schafer Turns in Strong Outing in Baseball's 2-0 Loss to No. 18 Texas

Senior righthander goes the distance against Longhorns.

Senior righthander Dalton Schafer went the distance in a 2-0 loss to No. 18 Texas Tuesday night in Austin.
Box Score

AUSTIN, Texas – Houston Baptist senior righthander Dalton Schafer was brilliant, but the Huskies couldn't provide any support in a 2-0 loss to No. 18 Texas Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Schafer (0-1) pitched a complete game for the Huskies (3-4), allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out three, while throwing only 78 pitches and shutting out the Longhorns for six innings.

Senior leftfielder David Pfuntner, senior rightfielder Kolby Arnst and junior centerfielder Jake Gonzalez had the only hits for HBU, which were all singles.

Centerfielder Tim Maitland went 2-for-3 with a double, while leftfielder Jonathan Walsh went 2-for-4 with a run. Designated hitter Alex Silver singled and scored, while shortstop Jordan Etier drove in the other run for Texas (3-5).

The Longhorns used six pitchers on the night, with Parker French (1-0) getting credit for the victory, striking out one in a perfect two innings. Corey Knebel notched his third save of the year for Texas, pitching a perfect ninth and striking out two.

Texas finally broke through in the seventh, as Walsh led off with a single to center and went to second on Marlow's sacrifice bunt. Silver singled to left to put runners on the corners, then Lusson laid down a bunt down the first base line, but Brown's throw to the plate was late, as the first run of the game crossed the plate. Felts singled to right to load the bases with one out, and Etier lifted a sacrifice fly to left to put the Longhorns ahead, 2-0.

The Huskies got a runner to third only once, when Arnst smashed a two-out single to center in the sixth. On the next play, sophomore first baseman Bradley Brown hit a routine grounder to second, but first baseman Kirby Bellow dropped the throw, allowing Arnst to go to third. Gonzalez struck out to end the threat.

Schafer threw only five pitches in the second innings, getting the first two batters out on the first pitch and a three-pitch strikeout to end the inning. He induced double plays in the fourth and sixth, the latter of which was a line drive he snared and doubled the runner off second base to end a Longhorn threat.

The Huskies return to action when they hit the road for a three-game series against UT-Arlington Friday-Sunday at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington, Texas.
