HOUSTON – Chelsea Thornhill scored her first goal in two years as Houston Baptist shut out visiting Howard, 2-0, Monday evening at Sorrels Field in the regular season finale for both teams.

The Huskies shut out their fourth opponent in the last five matches, outscoring their opponents 6-2 in that span.

The match was fairly even until Arielle Rodriguez's unassisted goal in the 22nd minute. After a Howard foul, Rodriguez took the free kick. Her shot went through several defenders and hit the upper right part of the net for her second goal of the season.

The Huskies struck again, just two minutes until halftime, as Thornhill scored, assisted by Emily Hughes. Hughes sent a centering pass and Thornhill slid, kicking the ball with her left foot to the lower right corner of the net.

HBU nearly made it 3-0 in the 89th minute, but Howard's goalkeeper, Kyra Dickinson, made a fantastic leaping save off a shot by Rebekah Tovar.

HBU outshot the Bison 17-5 and 11-1 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were even at four apiece.

Rodriguez led HBU with four shot attempts, which were all on goal. Tovar and Cindy Hedden each had three shot attempts.

Shelby Horn earned her 10th win and seventh shutout while making just one save on the night.

Jordan Brown led Howard (2-15-2, 1-4-0 GWC) with two shot attempts and one shot on goal. Dickinson made nine saves while taking the tough loss.

HBU (10-6-3, 4-1-0 GWC) will now head to Utah for the Great West Conference Tournament. The Huskies are the second seed and earn a first-round bye. Top seed – and tournament host – Utah Valley also earns a first-round bye while going 5-0-0 in the conference. HBU's opponent in the semifinals is TBA. Be sure to check for updates on HBUHuskies.com. The tournament will be held Nov. 2-5.
