HOUSTON – An extra day between matches did not slow down the Houston Baptist offense, as the Huskies put a five-spot on visiting Prairie View A&M in a 5-1 victory Monday evening from Sorrels Field.
The match was postponed from 1 pm Sunday to 7 pm Monday due to the rain in the Houston area over the weekend.
There was no score until Prairie View's Gabriela Ramos scored in the 23rd minute, assisted by Yosselyn Aguilar. Ramos hit a beautiful shot that hit just under the crossbar and dropped down over the line.
The Lady Panther lead lasted just 1:14, when
Arielle Rodriguez scored unassisted, as her free kick was nearly identical to Ramos', hitting just under the crossbar.
HBU would add two more goals before halftime to lead 3-1 at the break.
Emily Hughes scored the eventual game winner in the 31st minute, assisted by
Molly Missimer. Hughes' shot found the lower left part of the net.
Taylor Gibson scored in the 40th minute, assisted by Hughes. Hughes sent a pass up the middle in the box and Gibson's shot hit the top left part of the net for the Huskies' third goal of the match.
At the break, the Huskies outshot Prairie View 11-5 and 6-3 in shots on goal.
It took Gibson just two minutes in the second half to score her second goal of the match, assisted by
Rebecca Jardon. Jardon sent a centering pass to Gibson, whose shot hit the upper right part.
Natalie Hager scored the final goal of the match in the 65th minute, assisted by
Amina Radoncic and Gibson. Gibson sent a cross-field pass to Radoncic, whose shot was stopped by keeper Dominique Dillion, but the rebound found Hager, who tapped the ball into the open net.
HBU outshot the Lady Panthers 28-6 in the match.
Gibson led the Huskies with four points, while Hughes had a three-point match with a goal and an assist. Radoncic, who had one assist, had a match-high six shots.
Shelby Horn earned her sixth win on the season, making two saves in 45 minutes.
Lara Johnson made one save in the second half.
Aguilar, Katherine Sheppard, and Ramos each had two shots for the Lady Panthers.
Bianca Garza started the match and allowed one goal in 27:42 while making three saves. Abigail Personius took the loss, allowing three goals in 36:59 with zero saves. Dillion played the final 25:19 and made three saves.
HBU, (6-5-3) unbeaten in its last four matches (3-0-1) are off until beginning conference play on Thu., Oct. 11 at South Carolina State.
