LAKE CHARLES, La. – The HBU softball team split a pair of one-run games on the opening day of the Cowgirl Classic on Friday. The Huskies defeated Southern, 4-3, but lost to host McNeese State, 6-5.
In game one, after spotting Southern an early 1-0 lead, the Huskies scored all four runs in the final three innings to win.
Audrey Phillips started the first inning with a single. She stole second, advanced to third on a single and scored on a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the fifth, after
Jaymie Heibel singled,
Holly Webb reached on a fielder's choice. She scored on a triple by
Daniella Rodarte.
Mollye Mlcak doubled, bringing home Rodarte, as HBU led, 2-1.
The Huskies scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth to lead, 3-1.
Kate Maddock reached on base by a Jaguar error, advanced to second on a single and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She crossed home on a grounder by
Mac Christensen.
In the top of the seventh, Southern's lead-off hitter Faydra Hall reached on an error and one batter later, Phillips homered, tying the game at three. Shawntall Steamer singled, which prompted an HBU pitching change with the lead runner on base and nobody out.
Kendall Stiefel relieved starter
Keely Shuler and got two strikeouts and one grounder to end the threat.
Southern changed pitchers in the bottom of the seventh. Mlcak hit a two-out double and scored the winning run on a single by Callie Herringonton to end the game.
Rodarte and Mlcak each had two hits for the Huskies, with one RBI and one run scored apiece. Stiefel earned the win, pitching one inning and allowing zero hits while striking out two.
Steamer led Southern going 3-for-4 at the plate, while Phillips was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Carol Myers took the loss, as she pitched one inning, allowing one run.
In the second game of the day, McNeese State jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning. After striking out the lead-off batter, Lindsey Langner singled and crossed home plate on a two-run home run by Molly Guidry.
The Cowgirls added a single run in the bottom of the third as Claire Terracina started the inning with a single. She advanced to second on a Husky error and stole third. She scored on another Husky error.
In the bottom of the fourth, McNeese State scored two runs to lead HBU, 5-0. Stacey Conley started the inning with a single and was replaced for a pinch-runner, Holly Lawrence. The next batter, Katie Roux, doubled, advancing Lawrence to third. Dani Price singled, bringing home Lawrence. Roux scored the second run of the inning as Kim Kennedy reached base on an error.
HBU tied the game at five in one inning, as the Huskies scored all five runs in the top of the sixth.
Jaymie Heibel started the inning reaching base on a Cowgirl error. Two straight singles loaded the bases with Huskies with only one out. After a pop-up to make it two outs,
Sara Corcoran singled, bringing home Heibel. The very next batter,
Kate Maddock hit a grand slam to tie the game at five.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the seventh, when
Jammie Weidert got a fly out to start the inning. Langner singled and advanced to second on a Husky error. Weidert struck out Guidry and just needed one more out to send the game into extra innings, but Alanna DiVitorrio singled, bringing home Langner to end the game.
The Huskies were held to just five hits, as Rodarte, Mlcak, Corcoran, Maddock and
Mac Christensen each had a base hit. Maddock led the Huskies with four RBI. Weidert took the loss, as she pitched 6.2 innings, allowing nine hits, three earned runs and one walk while striking out eight.
Langner and Price each had two hits for the Cowgirls, as Guildry had three RBI and Langner had two runs scored. Kayla Shepherd earned the win, pitching seven innings and allowing five hits, four earned runs and one walk while striking out nine.
HBU (6-5) will face Southern and Jackson State on Saturday on Day Two of the Cowgirl Classic. Game one starts at 11 am and game two is set to start at 1:30 pm.
