The HBU softball team hits the road for the first time in 2011 to face Sam Houston State in doubleheader action today, Feb. 16, with first pitch starting at 4 pm.

Sam Houston State leads the all-time series, 9-1, as HBU defeated SHSU, 1-0, at Husky Field last March in a rain-shortened game. Sara Corcoran's home run was the difference-maker.

HBU (1-2) opened play last weekend hosting Army. The Huskies won the first game, 8-0 in six innings, but lost game two, 13-5, and lost game three, 1-0.

The Huskies are led at the plate by Kaitlin Southerland, who is batting .571 and leads the team in hits (4), RBI (9) and on-base percentage (.757), while tied for first in runs (2), doubles (2) and home runs (1). Corcoran is hitting .500 and has the other home run for the Huskies and is second with eight RBI.

In the circle, Jammie Weidert earned the victory in game one and has a flawless 0.00 ERA, as she allowed five hits while striking out four and walking one in six innings. Kendall Stiefel pitched game three in her collegiate debut, throwing no-hit ball through five innings, but allowed the only run in the game and two hits, while striking out 12.

Sam Houston State (4-2) started the season last weekend in the Louisiana Cajun Classic. The Bearkats lost the first game to Arkansas, but rattled off three straight victories before falling to host Louisiana. SHSU hosted Texas Southern in its home opener yesterday afternoon and won, 7-1. Kim Damian hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie.

Alex Survant and Cecilia Castillo are each batting .667 for the Bearkats. Shelbi Tucker, who is batting .471, leads the team with eight hits, along with Damian, who is batting .421 and leads the team with nine RBI.

In the circle, Tomi Garrison has appeared in all five games and has a record of 3-1 with an ERA of 3.47. She has allowed nine earned runs and walked 14 while striking out 18.
