HUSKIES OPEN TRACK SEASON AT HILTON MEMORIAL MEET

Joseph, Newmeyer lead HBU in return to NCAA Division I competition

HOUSTON -- Jimmy Joseph was fourth in the men's long jump, and Gus Newmeyer won her heat of the women's mile to take 12th overall as Houston Baptist University returned to NCAA Division I indoor track and field competition for the first time in almost 20 years at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Meet Friday at the University of Houston.

Joseph spanned 22-9.25 to take fourth in the long jump for the top men's effort of the day, while Newmeyer clocked 5:22.34 to win heat three of the mile.

"This was a day of firsts for HBU track and field," said head coach Theresa Fuqua. "It was a great opportunity for our athletes to finally get on the track against other NCAA Division I teams, and the Huskies acquitted themselves well in many areas. We as a staff knew that it would be a challenging day for the team, but there were so many positives and overall it was a good opener to our inaugural season."

Other top performances were turned in by Jocques Robinson. whose 22.98 gave him eighth in the men's 200, and Trey Rodriguez, who was ninth in the collegiate shot put with a toss of 48-6.75.

HBU travels to Lake Charles, La., next Friday for the McNeese State nvitational.
