MONTGOMERY, Texas – The Houston Christian University men's golf team opened the spring season Monday with 36 holes at the Bentwater Intercollegiate and sits sixth in the 14-team field at +15 (581) at Bentwater Country Club.
The Huskies posted rounds of +5 (293) and +10 (298) on the par-72 layout and enter Tuesday's final round one stroke behind East Texas A&M for fifth and five shots out of the top four. Host Sam Houston leads the tournament at +4, followed by VCU at +9 and Ohio at +10.
Brooks Pawlak paced HCU and is tied for eighth individually at +2 (143). Pawlak opened the day with a 1-under 70, making four birdies over his final nine holes to climb the leaderboard. He followed with a 73 in the afternoon round, highlighted by birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 and another on the par-5 18th to close the day under par on the back nine.
Brendon Willey turned in the Huskies' most consistent performance at +3 (145) to sit tied for 16th. Willey carded a 73 in the morning, rebounding from an early stretch with birdies on Nos. 1 and 8. In the second round he posted an even-par 72, playing the front nine in 36 and adding birdies on 8 and 16.
Carter Patterson finished at +3 (148) and tied for 33rd after matching rounds of 74-74. Patterson birdied the par-4 2nd in the morning and closed his first round with a strong even-par back nine. In the afternoon he played his final nine holes at 1-under, including a birdie on the par-3 17th.
Mason Napier also sits tied for 33rd at +4 (148) with scores of 73-75. Napier made three birdies in the opening round, including on the par-3 7th and par-3 17th. During the second 18 he added another birdie at 17 and played the front nine in 39 to remain in the middle of the field.
John "Cooper" Camp rounded out the lineup at +6 (150). Camp opened with a 73, highlighted by birdies on 7 and 17, before finishing with a 77 in the afternoon round.
HCU will be paired with Central Arkansas and East Texas A&M for Tuesday's final round. The Huskies begin at 8 a.m. with Pawlak starting on No. 4, Willey on No. 5, Patterson on No. 6B, Napier on No. 6A, and Camp on No. 7.
