SB: Huskies head to Albuquerque for final tournament weekend of slate

HCU faces Tarleton in opener before two games with both UTEP and host UNM

Houston Christian University takes to the road for its final tournament of the campaign, heading to Albuquerque for the University of New Mexico Invitational. The Huskies will play five games in three days, starting with a Friday matchup with Tarleton State University. HCU will also face UTEP and host New Mexico twice apiece.

The Huskies won the finale of the Bearkat Invitational last weekend in Huntsville, rallying past Prairie View A&M for an 8-6 victory on Saturday afternoon. HCU avenged a loss to Panthers on Friday afternoon with a huge comeback, as the Huskies trailed 4-0 after one inning.

Jade Moreno homered and Raenna Liscano singled in another run as the Huskies knotted things at four in the fourth. In the fifth, HCU took the lead when Chloe Foster reached on catcher's interference allowing Liscano to score for a 5-4 edge. In the bottom of the frame, Addy Prasifka came on in relief to extinguish a bases-loaded fire with no harm done and preserve the lead. In the sixth, HCU put a three-spot up on an RBI single by Jocelyn Briseno and a two-run single by Madison Dominguez.

HCU pounded out a season-high 13 hits in the contest in scoring a season-best eight runs. Moreno got the win and Prasifka the save as the Huskies (2-12) snapped a five-game skid. Briseno collected her first career four-hit game, going 4-4 with a run scored and two RBI.

Briseno leads the Huskies with a .333 batting average and has driven in six runs. Madison Dominguez is batting .296 with five stolen bases while Chloe Foster leads the club with seven RBI and bats .267 on the year.

HCU and Tarleton play in Friday's opener, the fifth all-time meeting between the two schools. The Texans defeated HCU 10-2 at the Whataburger Invitational in Stephenville last Valentine's Day to even the series at two games apiece.

The Texans are currently 11-5 on the season after a 2-4 showing at the Texan Classic last weekend. Senior utility player Hayden Fox bats .512 with 16 RBI and sophomore catcher Macie Vickers hits .407 with a homer and 27 RBI for a TSU offense averaging 8.4 runs per game. Sophomore lefty Shelby Schultz leads the hurlers at 3-0 with a .420 ERA and 18 K's in 20 innings pitched.

Friday's second game is the first of two straight against UTEP. The Miners are 6-6 on the season after going 3-3 in their own Dr. Diana Natalico Memorial Tournament last weekend. HCU and UTEP have met a dozen times with the series tied 6-6. Texas-El Paso took the most recent meetings, winning twice in February 2014 at their own UTEP Tournament, winning 5-2 and 10-5 in El Paso.

Sophomore infielder Marissa Burchard leads UTEP with a .474 batting average to go with 12 RBI and eight stolen bases. Sophomore catcher Camrynn Guthrie bats .367 with a team best three homers. Freshman right-hander Tatyana Vega has been a workhorse for the Miners thus far, going 6-2 with a 5.10 ERA in 45.1 innings of work.

HCU will take on host New Mexico in their second game Saturday as well as their tournament finale on Sunday. The Lobos are 5-8 overall after taking two of three from Abilene Christian last weekend in Abilene. HCU and UNM have met just three times, the most recent coming last year in the season-opening Houston Invitational at Husky Field when the Lobos nipped the Huskies twice, winning 1-0 and 3-2.

Miracle McKenzie, a sophomore infielder, paces the Lobos with a .343 clip at the dish with three dingers and 10 RBI, followed closely by another pair of sophomores. Infielder Gabrielle Briones and catcher Jessica DeLeon both bat .333 with six RBI apiece. Freshman right-hander Caitlin Benningfield and junior righty Makenna Guest are each 2-2 on the season to lead the pitching staff.

The games on Friday against Tarleton State (11 am CT) and UTEP (1:30 pm CT), as well as the single game against New Mexico on Sunday (12:30 pm CT) can all be streamed on the Mountain West Network (golobos.com/watch).

Saturday's two games against UTEP (11 am CT) and New Mexico (4 pm CT) are available via LIVE STATS only.

Following the final tournament of the season, the Huskies will embark on the 27-game Southland slate. HCU opens the conference campaign with a three-game series against Northwestern State University on March 6-7 at Husky Field.
