SB: HCU rallies past PVAMU to salvage finale of Bearkat Invitational

Huskies drop Saturday opener to Austin Peay; Briseno notches first career 4-hit game in finale

HUNTSVILLE --- Houston Christian University split a pair of games on the final day of the Bearkat Invitational on Saturday, falling to Austin Peay State University 9-0 before rallying for an 8-6 victory over Prairie View A&M to salvage the weekend finale.

HCU moves to 2-12 on the season and returns to action next week when it travels to Albuquerque for the final tournament of the campaign. The Huskies will participate in the University of New Mexico Invitational from Thursday to Saturday, beginning the weekend with a game against Tarleton State before playing twice against both UTEP and host New Mexico.

GAME 1 vs. Austin Peay

APSU and HCU hooked up in a pitcher's duel for five-plus innings, before the Governors exploded for seven runs in the sixth to end things early.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Governors got a single up the middle from Brie Howard, who then scored on an RBI double by Sammie Shelander. The Huskies would load the bases in the second on three consecutive two-out hits from Cara Pitman, Chloe Phe and Ella Herrewig, but couldn't push anything across the plate.

In the sixth, Howard cranked a two-run homer to left center to extend Austin Peay's lead to 3-0. A double by Natalie Burns make the score 4-0 and the Governors would tack on five more in the frame to end things early, capped by a two-run double by Makayla Navarro and RBI single from Shelby Allen.

HCU couldn't muster much more that the five singles it got off APSU's Cameron Grayson, with Madison Dominguez and Chloe Foster chipping in base-hits along with the aforementioned trio from the second inning. Pitman allowed just one run and two hits through her first five innings before the rocky sixth and ended with one walk and three strikeouts.

Grayson went the distance for APSU with one K and five hits allowed. Howard led the offense, going 2-3 with the homer, two runs scored and two RBI.

GAME 2 vs. Prairie View A&M

PVAMU jumped out to the early advantage, putting four runs on the board in the first frame. A two-run double by Mia Nunez was the big blow, putting the Panthers up 3-0, and she then came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Morgan Smith.

HCU chipped away in the second. Heidi Maytum doubled with one out and moved to third on a groundout. Pinch-hitter Breana Herrera then tripled to right field to score Maytum and break the ice for the Huskies. Jocelyn Briseno then singled to right to bring in Herrera and cut the lead in half.

The Huskies would knot things up in the fourth. Jade Moreno led off the inning with her second homer of the season, and HCU would then get runners on second and third via a single by Briseno, a walk to Madison Dominguez and groundout by Chloe Foster. Raenna Liscano then singled to the left side to score Briseno and get things back to even at 4-4.

HCU would threaten again in the fifth as it loaded the bases with two outs on a walk to Breana Herrera and back-to-back singles by Briseno and Dominguez. Chloe Foster would then reach on catcher's interference to bring in Breana Herrera and give the Huskies a 5-4 edge.

After PVAMU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth, Addy Prasikfa came on in relief and would induce fielder's choice groundouts by the next two batters to preserve the lead.

The Huskies pushed the lead to two in the sixth, loading the sacks again with two outs. Karlie Barba and Cara Pitman led the inning off with singles before two consecutive outs. Herrera walked again to fill the bags before Briseno singled to the left side to score Barba for a 6-4 lead. Madison Dominguez then singled to center to bring home two runs and HCU had doubled the Panthers up 8-4.

PVAMU would get single runs in the sixth and the seventh, but Prasifka closed the door as the Huskies held on for the victory.

Jocelyn Briseno led a 13-hit HCU offense by posting her first career four-hit game, going 4-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Madison Dominguez went 2-3 with two RBI and Breana Herrera went 1-2 with two walks, an RBI and three runs scored.

Leah Hammack went the first two innings, while Jade Moreno picked up her first win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Addy Prasifka went the final 2.2 innings to earn her first save of the year.

Mia Nunez went 3-4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI for the Panthers (5-7). Martiza Martinez went six innings in picking up the loss, allowing 13 hits and seven runs to fall to 3-7 on the year.
