SB: Huskies drop two tough ones on first day of UNM Invitational

Tarleton rallies late in game one; UTEP walks off in seventh of game two

ALBUQUERQUE --- Houston Christian University dropped a pair of tight games on the first day of the UNM Invitational, falling to Tarleton State 6-4 in the opener before UTEP rallied for two runs in the seventh to steal a 3-2 win in the second game.

The Huskies are now 2-14 on the season. HCU will be back at it on Saturday with two more games, facing off with UTEP once again at 11 am and versus host New Mexico at 4 pm, both Central time starts.

GAME 1 vs. Tarleton

The game started with both teams getting out of jams in the first. The Texans loaded the bases with no outs in the first before Leah Hammack got a lineout and a 4-2-3 double play to escape unscathed. I the bottom half, the Huskies put two on with no outs and advanced to second and third with one, but could push nothing across.

Tarleton broke the ice in the second inning. Two hits to start the frame were followed by an RBI fielder's choice by Mariah Debose, an RBI single by Hayden Fox and an RBI groundout by Mikayla Wilson that staked the Texans to a 3-0 lead.

HCU got one back in the bottom half when Ella Herrewig singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on double to the gap by Jocelyn Briseno, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

In the bottom of the third, the Huskies put up a crooked number, scoring three times. HCU would load the bases when Chloe Foster was hit by a pitch to lead off with Karlie Barba and Jade Moreno following with walks. Heidi Maytum then hit a Texas Leaguer to center to score Foster, and Raenna Liscano drew the third free pass of the frame, bringing in Barba. Ella Herrewig then lofted a foul ball to the left field line in foul territory, deep enough to drive in pinch-runner Cara Pitman and give HCU a 4-3 lead.

The Texans would reclaim the lead in the fifth on a two-run single by Madison Runyan and add some insurance in the sixth on an RBI single by Jaelynn Duke for a 6-4 lead that closed the scoring.

HCU had six games from six different players, with Ella Herrewig going 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the way. Heidi Maytum went 1-2 with an RBI while Chloe Foster and Jocelyn Briseno each went 1-3.

Addy Prasikfa (0-4) took the loss despite 5.2 innings of solid relief. She gave up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts after taking over in the second inning.

Madison Runyan was 3-4 with two RBI to lead a 12-hit attack for Tarleton (12-5). Mariah Dubose, Hayden Fox and Jaelyn Duke each with 2-3 with an RBI.

Alex Aguilar got the win for the Texans, tossing three shutout innings of relief, while Shelby Schultz earned her first save with two perfect innings to close the door.

GAME 2 vs. UTEP

HCU got on the board first in the top of the second with Ella Herrewig providing an RBI groundout that scored Chloe Foster, who had singled to lead off the inning.

The Huskies would tack on another run in the top of the fourth, as Foster launched a sacrifice fly to right field to score Maddy Bailey, who had singled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a base knock by Karlie Barba.

In the sixth, the Miners cut the deficit in half. An Aaliyah Betancourt single began the frame and she was moved to second on a Bri Garcia sacrifice. After moving to third on a Jordan Credeur single, Betancourt would score on a Hallie Hogan single to left but Credeur was cut down at third base by Maddy Bailey. Cara Pitman then got pinch-hitter Iliana Munoz to groundout to first base, squelching the rally.

UTEP would then rally in the bottom of the seventh. The Miners knotted the game on a Marissa Burchard homer to left to lead things off. Camrynn Guthrie doubled with one out, and was brought home with the game-winning run on an RBI single to center by Kenna Carranza.

Maddy Bailey went 3-3 with a run scored and two outfield assists for the Huskies. Chloe Foster went 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI for HCU, which got seven hits in the game.

Cara Pitman went six strong innings, scattering 11 hits and just two runs before giving way after the Burchard homer in the seventh. Leah Hammack (0-3) took the defeat, giving up three hits and the one run.

Buchard went 3-4 with a double, homer and RBI for the Miners (7-6). Guthrie also went 3-4, while Brantley Lavas and Jordan Credeur added two hits each.

Serenity Jacoway picked up her first win of the season, going the distance and giving up seven hit and two runs.
