ALBUQUERQUE --- Houston Christian University split a pair of games on the second day of the University of New Mexico Invitational on Saturday at Lobo Softball Field. GAME 1 vs. UTEP

The game started off ominously enough as the Miners picked up where they left off on Friday, when they scored two in the bottom of the seventh to earn the comeback victory. On Saturday, UTEP put twon the board in their first at-bat, getting back-to-back RBI doubles from Kenna Carranza and  Aaliyah Betancourt.

The Huskies came right back in the bottom half of the first. Madison Dominguez and Jocelyn Briseno led off the frame with walks, and Maddy Bailey brought home Dominguez with an RBI single up the middle. Chloe Foster then walked to load the bases, and Leah Hammack brought home Briseno with a sacrifice fly to knot the score.

UTEP retook the lead in the third when Marissa Burchard tripled to lead off and then came in two batters later on a double by Camrynn Guthrie.

Two more came across the pay station in the third to give the Huskies the lead for good. Leah Hammack singled to lead off and moved to second when Heidi Maytum reached on an error. Tayden Alexander ran for Maytum and both she and Hammack moved out on a sacrifice by Cara Pitman. Chloe Phe then singled right back up the box to bring in Hammack and later Alexander scored on a bunt single by Madison Dominguez to push the Huskies in front, 4-3.

A Maddy Bailey solo homer to right center in the fourth pushed the margin to two, 5-3. In the sixth, the Huskies loaded the bases on a single by Briseno and walks to Bailey and Foster before a sacrifice fly from Leah Hammack and an RBI single by Maytum extended the advantage to 7-3.

The Miners got another RBI double by Guthrie and a sacrifice fly from Betancourt in the seventh to cut their deficit to two, but got nothing more.

Maddy Bailey had her second straight solid day at the plate, going 2-2 with two walks, the homer, two runs and two RBI. Leah Hammack was 1-2 with two RBI while Jocelyn Briseno went 1-3 with two trips across the plate.

Jade Moreno (2-0) got the win in relief, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing three hits and two runs.

Camrynn Guthrie went 3-4 with two RBI for UTEP (7-7). Tatyana Vega (6-3) was saddled with the loss, going 5.2 in relief and allowing seven hits and five runs.

GAME 2 vs. NEW MEXICO

New Mexico jumped out in front in the second game, pushing five across the plate in the opening frame. A two-run homer by Allie Williams got things started, and Hayden Luderer cranked a three-run job later in the frame as the Lobos led 5-0.

HCU got single runs in the second and third on and RBI single by Raenna Liscano and then a sacrifice fly by Jocelyn Briseno. Allie Williams provided a sac fly in the third, before another five-spot in the fourth broke the game open, highlighted by a bases-loaded triple by Brianna Williams.

Liscano went 2-2 with an RBI for the Huskies, who managed only five hits. Cara Pitman (1-6) was stuck with the loss, getting knocked out of the game in the big Lobo first.

McKenna Guest (4-2) got the win, going four innings and allowing just the five hits and two runs. She was supported by a 10-hit offense, paced by four players with two hits each, including Brianna and Allie Williams, who each went 2-3 with a run and three RBI.
