WSOC: Huskies Host Lamar for Pivotal SLC Matchup

HCU is three points behind the first-place Cardinals with two matches left in the regular season

HOUSTON – With two matches left in the 2026 regular season, the HCU women's soccer team controls its own destiny as the Huskies aim for the regular season Southland Conference championship beginning with a 4:00 p.m. Sunday matchup against the Lamar Cardinals at Sorrels Field.

With 16 points, the Huskies (8-3-6, 4-0-4 SLC) trail the league-leading Cardinals (9-2-4, 6-1-1 SLC) by three points and are tied with UIW. An HCU win on Sunday would tie them with Lamar at the top with 19 points while UIW plays at Stephen F. Austin on Sunday with a chance to also move to 19 points with match remaining. HCU closes out the regular season with a trip to San Antonio to take on the Cardinals. Two wins to close out the season secures the No. 1 seed for the Huskies, by virtue of owning the head-to-head tiebreaker in the event of a tie with Lamar, and provides a bye to the semifinals of the SLC Tournament.

The Huskies are on a 12-match unbeaten streak that's tied for the sixth-longest current streak among all 345 NCAA Division I women's soccer programs. Over that 12-match span, HCU is 7-0-5 and has out-scored its opponents by a 28-14 margin.

Senior Olivia Rossman has been on her game since conference play began with seven goal involvements in eight games. Her six assists in league play are twice as many as any other player in the conference. Isabella Alamo and Paisley Barela are both tied for fourth in the conference with three goals against SLC opponents.

Last Sunday, Oct. 25, Jasmine Diaz netted the game-winner with less than 90 seconds left to play with a beautiful goal from 30 yards out to the top corner to give HCU a 1-0 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Lamar has won five-straight matches and is on a six-match unbeaten run having not allowed a goal in the last three. The Cardinals' last loss was a 2-0 road loss to Northwestern State on Sept. 24.

The Cardinals have allowed just 10 goals in 15 games this year with goalkeeper Keely Thomas sporting a 0.41 goals against average and a .902 save percentage. Senior Marissa Gross leads the Cardinals with 10 goals this season. The next highest goal total by a Lamar player is four.

Following Sunday's game, the Huskies will travel to take on the UIW Cardinals in San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7:00 p.m. before heading to Commerce, Texas the following week for the Southland Conference Tournament that begins on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
