WBB: Huskies Set for Road SLC Matchup vs. Nicholls

HCU has a chance to start Southland Conference play with a 3-0 record for the first time in program history

THIBODAUX, La. – The HCU women's basketball team heads into its Thursday evening matchup against the Nicholls looking to start Southland Conference play with three-straight wins for the first time in program history when the Huskies and Colonels tip-off at 6:30 p.m. inside Stopher Gymnasium.

The Huskies (4-4, 2-0 SLC) have won their first two conference games of the year for the first time since the 2021-22 season when HCU won the SLC regular season title with a 12-2 mark against league opponents. HCU earned a hard-fought double-overtime win over Southeastern last Friday evening inside Sharp Gym, emerging with a 77-70 victory. Freshman guard Kamryn McLaurin enjoyed a career night, coming off the bench to score 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting. That performance earned the freshman SLC Player of the week honors and Co-Freshman of the Week recognition from the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Junior Jordan Jackson added 18 points in the win over SLU and narrowly missed out on her third double-double of the season, finishing with nine rebounds. Jackson was a perfect 11-of-11 from the foul line in the game. She is one of three Huskies averaging at least 10 points per game this year, currently scoring 10.8 ppg while McLaurin leads the way with 14 ppg and sophomore Grace Booth sitting at 13.8 ppg.

Nicholls (4-4, 0-1 SLC) heads into Thursday's contest coming off a 54-52 home loss to UIW. The Colonels trailed by as many as seven in the fourth quarter before rallying to tie things up at 52-52 with just 31 seconds left on the clock. With the final possession, UIW's Raimi McCrary collected an offensive rebound put in a layup off the glass as time expired to sink the hosts.

Sophomore guard Jesslynn Jalomo is leading the Colonels with 11.9 ppg while Jasmine Matthews is adding 11.1 ppg and Sh'Diamond McKnight is averaging 10.8 ppg. Senior Emani Burks has been Nicholls' top rebounder, averaging 6.8 boards per game.

Following Thursday's game, the Huskies will return home for a matchup against crosstown foe Rice on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 2:00 p.m. inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
