HOUSTON – Saturday marks the first-ever hardwood meeting between HCU and UT Rio Grande Valley as Southland Conference opponents but not the first time as conference foes, facing each other nine times as members of the Great West Conference, when they tip-off at 1:00 pm inside Sharp Gym.
 
HCU (4-12, 1-6 SLC) fell short its last time out, on Thursday evening, falling to visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a 62-55 final. Junior Victoria Dixon led the Huskies in the loss, scoring a season-high 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She also finished with three steals, tying her career-high, two assists and two rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench.
 
The Huskies got a number of strong bench performances against the Islanders as Amy Cotton matched career-highs of six blocked shots and 12 points. Additionally, Tiffany Tullis led HCU with nine rebounds while scoring six points as a reserve.
 
The Vaqueros (9-9, 4-3 SLC) are coming to town off a 52-43 loss at UIW on Thursday after winning their previous three games. Junior forward Charlotte O'Keefe posted a 16-point, 16-rebound double-double in the loss to lead UTRGV on both fronts. UTRGV shot 30.4 percent from the floor and just 13 percent from behind the arc.
 
Senior Kade Hackerott leads UTRGV in scoring for the season, averaging 13.2 points per game, and has a team-best 52 assists. O'Keefe, meanwhile, ranks sixth in the nation on the boards with an 11.5 rebounds per game average while also scoring 10.1 ppg to average a double-double.
 
The last meeting between the two teams occurred on Dec. 1, 2022 with UTRGV earning a 68-51 victory in Sharp Gym.
 
The Huskies will be on the road for their next four games with three of those taking place in Louisiana. First up is a trip to Hammond, La. to face Southeastern on Thursday, Jan. 23, before heading across Lake Pontchartrain to take on New Orleans on Saturday, Jan. 25.
