HOUSTON – HCU women's soccer fell behind 1-0 in the first half and, despite putting pressure on Stephen F. Austin in the second half, dropped a 2-0 Southland Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.
The Huskies (3-6-3, 1-1-1 SLC) got a good look early when
Emily Jaimes had a shot to the bottom left stopped by SFA (5-2-2, 2-1-0 SLC) goalkeeper Sierra McCluer in the seventh minute. Much of the action in the first half came from the visitors, however, with the Ladyjacks sending 15 shots toward goal to the Huskies' two. Of those 15 attempts by SFA, seven were on goal with Ava Shannon scoring to the top right with an assist from Kamryn Giles in the 39
th minute.
SFA had four shots early in the second half before the Huskies started to assert some pressure in their offensive end. Jaimes made a strong run from near midfield all the way down inside the 18 but her attempt at the end of her run missed wide left. Just a couple of minutes later, in the 64
th minute, Jaimes had another shot saved. The Huskies had another good opportunity off a corner kick in the 70
th minute when the ball bounced around a bit before ending up at the feet of
Katie Marker directly in front of goal near the top of the box but her shot was unable to make it through the bodies in front goal and was blocked on its way. The Ladyjacks put the game away in the 79
th minute when HCU keeper
Emmy McKeon cleared out a cross that landed at the feet of Maddie Bowers who quickly kicked it into the net as McKeon was recovering.
HCU was out-shot 23-7 in the loss with SFA putting nine shots on goal to the Huskies' two. The visitors also held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks earned.
McKeon finished the day with six saves in goal and Jaimes led the HCU offense with three shots taken.
HCU heads south for a Thursday, Oct. 3, evening matchup in Edinburg, Texas against the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros.
