EDINBURG, Texas – On Thursday evening at the UTRGV Soccer & Track Complex, the HCU women's soccer team played a tightly-contested game against UT Rio Grande Valley but an early second half goal gave the host Vaqueros a 1-0 win over the Huskies.
The first half didn't see much offensive action with just four total shots taken.
Olivia Rossman had a pair of shots taken with one off target and one blocked for the Huskies (3-7-3, 1-2-1 SLC) while the only UTRGV (5-3-4, 1-0-3 SLC) shot of the half was a blocked attempt by Rubi Ortiz. HCU's
Lia Bonet had the solo shot on goal in the 34
th minute from well outside the 18-yard box.
Early in the second half, with the score even at 0-0, the Vaqueros' Rosie Train place a long free kick to the top right corner, forcing HCU keeper
Emmy McKeon to make a save and deflect the shot over the top of the crossbar to set up UTRGV for a corner kick. The ensuing corner, off the foot of Train, was placed right in front of the mouth of the goal and Savannah Frisby headed it past McKeon to give UTRGV the 1-0 lead in the 50
th minute.
The best attempt by the Huskies in the second half came in the 78
th minute when
Alexa Huerta dribbled to the her left to the top of the box and found a lane to the goal and her shot beat the UTRGV keeper but hit off the left post. The last shot on goal of the match came in the 83
rd minute when a Linnea Eid shot from just outside the box was saved by McKeon.
Shots were slightly in favor of the hosts, 8-6, with just a total of four shots on goal. UTRGV held a distinct 12-0 advantage in corner kicks, however. Rossman's two shot attempts led the Huskies and McKeon finished with a pair of saves.
The Huskies are off until next Friday, Oct. 11, when they travel to Natchitoches, La. to face Northwestern State at 7:00 p.m.
