HOUSTON – Junior
Alexa Huerta scored the game-winner and freshman
Emmy McKeon pushed her streak to over 300 minutes played without allowing a goal as the HCU women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 Southland Conference victory over Nicholls on Friday evening at Sorrels Field.
While the visitors recorded the first shot of the match, a wide attempt in the 10
th minute, the Huskies (3-5-3, 1-0-1 SLC) then began to take control.
Olivia Rossman and
Katie Marker each had shots on goal saved in the 14
th and 15
th minutes with a Huerta shot also stopped less than 10 minutes later. At the 34:40 mark, a
Danika Etter cross found Huerta near the penalty spot where the junior took possession and quickly slotted it past the Nicholls (2-5-1, 0-2 SLC) keeper for a 1-0 HCU lead.
HCU took that 1-0 lead into the half and added to it just over eight minutes into the second.
Emma Smith delivered the assist to Rossman who blasted a shot into the net from straight on in front of the goal. With the game at 2-0, the Colonels started to create opportunities over the final 20 minutes of the game. Nicholls held a 6-1 advantage in shot attempts in that span with
Emmy McKeon keeping the visitors off the board with four saves on those six shots faced.
Huerta's goal was her team-leading third of the season while Rossman's was her second. Etter and Smith's assists were their first of the year.
Emily Jaimes led the Huskies with four shots attempted as HCU out-shot Nicholls, 13-10. In goal, McKeon finished with fives saves and extended her current streak to 309:27 without allowing a goal.
The Huskies welcome Stephen F. Austin to Sorrels Field on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 1:00 p.m. at SLC play rolls along.
