WSOC: Huskies Strike Early but Fall 4-2 at Sam Houston

Junior Alexa Huerta scores twice in the game’s first 17 minutes

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – HCU took a two-goal lead in the first 17 minutes of the game but ultimately dropped a 4-2 decision to Sam Houston at Pritchett Field on Friday evening.

The Huskies (0-3) struck quickly with Katie Marker dribbling into the 18-yard box before finding Alexa Huerta at the top of the box where she had a pair of touches before ripping a shot past the Bearkats' (2-0-1) keeper and just inside the left post to give HCU a 1-0 lead just 5:22 into the game.

HCU keeper Emmy McKeon made her first save on a long-range attempt 11 minutes in and just 5:30 later Huerta secured the brace, converting a penalty kick following a foul on Emily Jaimes in the box and the Huskies led 2-0. Sam Houston got on the board in the 33rd minute when Indigo Sims headed a cross past McKeon from in front of the goal off a cross from Ruth Larsen.

In the second half, Gabrielle Williams pulled the Bearkats even in the 60th minute, lofting a shot past McKeon to the bottom right corner from the corner of the 18-yard box. SHSU's Landri Townsend scored the next two for the Bearkats, finding the net in the 73rd and 82nd minutes.

The first half was evenly matched with the hosts holding a slight 4-3 advantage in shot attempts before keeping HCU from even a single shot attempt in the second half while taking 13 of their own.

Huerta's goals were her first two of the young season while Marker now has one goal and one assist. In goal, McKeon made five saves in her collegiate debut.

The Huskies wrap up their four-game road stretch on Sunday, Aug. 25, with a visit to Baton Rouge, La. to take on Southern at 1:00 p.m.
