BATON ROUGE, La. – HCU scored twice in the first 24 minutes and held on for a 2-1 road win over the Southern Lady Jaguars at A.W. Mumford Stadium on Sunday afternoon to give head coach
Nick Whiting his first win as head coach of the Huskies.
HCU (1-3) took the lead in the 13
th minute on the team's first shot of the match with
Emily Jaimes netted her first goal of the season with an assist from
Olivia Rossman. Jaimes had another shot attempt saved in the 19
th minute, just over four minutes before
Alexia Murillo staked the Huskies to a 2-0 lead with an assist from
Alexa Huerta at the 23:20 mark.
The Lady Jaguars (0-4) answered just over a minute later with a goal by Giftee Tor cutting it to a one-goal HCU lead. The Huskies'
Nia Musquiz put another attempt on goal in the 40
th minute, but HCU finished the half with a 2-1 lead and a slim 4-3 advantage in shot attempts for the period.
After being forced into an early save in the first half, freshman goalkeeper
Emmy McKeon preserved HCU's lead with a stop in the 63
rd minute. The Huskies totaled five shot attempts to SU's one in the second period with Rossman and Huerta each putting shots on goal in the final 10 minutes.
Jaimes' and Murillo's goals were their first of the season for the pair and give Jaimes six career goals while Murillo now stands at two career scores. Huerta, who scored twice on Friday at Sam Houston, was credited with her second assist of the year and already has six points. Rossman, meanwhile, picked up her first point of the season with her assist.
McKeon earned her first career win in goal for the Huskies, making two saves while allowing one goal. HCU finished the day with nine total shots taken, six of which were on goal, and earned eight corner kicks to just one corner by the hosts and just four total shot attempts.
HCU makes its' home debut on Saturday, Aug. 31, when the Huskies host the UTEP Miners at Sorrels Field at 7:00 p.m.
