HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The HCU women's soccer team continues its four-game season-opening road swing this weekend with a Friday evening matchup against Sam Houston before heading across state lines to take on Southern in Baton Rouge, La. on Sunday.
The Huskies (0-2) suffered a pair of losses to open the season, falling at Pacific and Sacramento State. HCU got goals from sisters Katie and
Jessica Marker while equaling its two opponents in shots and putting 10 of 30 attempts on target.
After beginning the season against a pair of first-time opponents, the Huskies face a familiar foe in Sam Houston (1-0-1). HCU has faced the Bearkats every year except two since 2007 and owns a 5-6-5 all-time record. Throughout the 17 years facing each other, neither team has ever won more than two in a row.
The Bearkats opened the season with a home draw, 1-1, against SFA before taking down the Houston Cougars on the road, 3-1, last Sunday. Senior Landri Townsend and junior Tiana Johnson each have one goal and one assist so far for Sam Houston with Townsend netting the game-winner at UH. In goal, Cassia Souza has 10 saves with just two goals allowed.
Southern (0-3) is coming off a 5-0 loss at South Florida on Wednesday, Aug. 21 after dropping matches at Ole Miss and at home to ULM on the opening weekend of the season. The Lady Jaguars, picked to finish third in the SWAC preseason poll, have not registered a goal yet this season but return three players who tied for the team lead with two goals last season. Goalkeeper Sydney Bellamy has already totaled 30 saves through just three games.
The Huskies and Lady Jaguars have met once before, a 6-0 HCU win at Sorrels Field in 2011.
HCU makes its home debut on Saturday, Aug. 31, hosting the UTEP Miners at 7:00 p.m.
