SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore
Jessica Marker scored her first career goal to pull the HCU women's soccer team within one late in the first half but the Huskies fell to Sacramento State, 3-1, at Hornet Field on Saturday afternoon.
HCU (0-2) and Sacramento State (1-1) each had a few shot attempts early with the Huskies'
Emily Jaimes coming the closest to putting one in during the 13
th minute curling a shot just outside the top right corner. The Hornets found the net at the 21:21 mark when Ellie Farber passed out wide to Abigail Lopez who then found a streaking Farber in front of the net to lift a shot over HCU keeper
Taylor Sanderson.
In the 35
th minute, the ball was on the ground bouncing between players off a free kick inside the 18-yard box where it landed at the feet of Madelyn Dougherty who snuck a shot past Sanderson to the bottom right corner for a 2-0 Sacramento State advantage.
Sanderson was busy in the second half, making five saves. The Hornets' final goal of the match came off the foot of Teysha-Rey Spinney-Kuahuia with an assist by Farber at the 72:13 mark. The Huskies kept pace with the hosts in shot attempts but managed just one on goal in the second half.
Sacramento State ended the day with a 20-15 advantage in shots attempted while putting nine shots on goal to the Huskies' two.
HCU returns to the Lone Star State following this season-opening trip to California, facing Sam Houston in Huntsville, Texas on Friday, Aug. 23, at 7:30 p.m.
