HOUSTON, Texas – After the opening day of the 2024 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Rice's Holloway Field, HCU senior
Scott Boon holds third place through five events in the decathlon while six runners qualified for Saturday's finals.
Boon opened the day with 814 points in the 100 meter dash thanks to a time of 11.21 before leaping a PR mark of 7.35m/24-1.25 to add 898 points in the long jump. He then picked up 642 points with a throw of 12.59m/41-3.75 in the shot put followed by clearing a height of 1.94m/6-4.5 for 749 points. Boon closed out the day with 802 points with a time of 50.28 in the 400 meters to bring his point total to 3,905 through five events. He trails first-place Isaiah Hudgens of UIW by just 121 points.
In the evening's running events, senior
Jessica Rabius got the Huskies started by winning her heat of the 800 meters with a time of 4:47.69 while in the men's 800m, senior
Alex Piquart also advanced after winning his heat with a time of 3:58.39 with freshman
Albin Wallenius also earning a spot in the finals with a mark of 3:59.07. Junior
Denzel Hinds earned a win in his heat of the 400 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 53.80, to advance to Sunday's finals. The women's 400h saw two more HCU runners move on with
Brianna Hinds posting a time of 1:03.55, placing fourth, and
Lanaye Keys finishing in 1:06.19, to place eighth.
The second day of the SLC Outdoor Championships begins at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.
