HOUSTON, Texas – Senior
Jessica Rabius led the way on the third and final day at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Rice's Holloway Field, winning a pair of gold medals with the HCU men and women earning sixth and seventh place overall finishes, respectively.
Saturday opened with senior
Liza Lap earning a silver medal in the women's discus on a season-best throw of 46.94m/154-0. Then, a bit later in the day, freshman
Josh Gillis-Harry leapt 14.93m/48-11.75 for an outdoor PR and a fourth place finish while fellow freshman
Dadrian Calhoun picked up a pair of points by finishing seventh with a mark of 14.74m/48-4.25 in the triple jump.
Rabius punctuated an already impressive career with a pair of gold medal finishes to bring her career medal count at SLC track & field championships, both indoor and outdoor, to 12. First, she defender her title from last year and won the 1500 meters by more than a second with a time of 4:27.43. She then made it three titles in the 800 meters thanks to a winning time of 2:07.56. In that women's 800m race, sophomore
Eline Mast came in fourth with a time of 2:11.66.
Senior
Alex Piquart made it a gold sweep of the 1500m, winning the men's race with a time of 3:50.07 to win by just .07 seconds. Meanwhile, in the men's 800m,
Krzysztof Turski won silver with a mark of 1:51.95 to finish less than two-tenths of a second out of first.
Denzel Hinds raced to a PR time of 51.96 to place third and shave nearly a full second of his previous personal best.
Brianna Hinds, meanwhile, finished fourth in the women's 400h and posted a new PR time of 1:01.06 to improve on her previous personal best by more than a second and cutting more than two seconds off her season-best time.
SJ Marais and
Ashton Munoz-Nieves came in sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 100 meter hurdles with times of 14.65 and 14.66.
Lanaye Keys picked up a point in the 100 meter hurdles, placing eighth with a time of 14.87.
Justice Artisst finished just off the podium in the 5000 meters, coming in fourth with a time of 14:41.23 while
Destiny Quintanilla ran a time of 18:06.80 to place sixth. Freshman
Jessica Martini added a point for the Huskies in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 12.51.
In the women's 4x400 relay,
Maria Bangala,
Jessica Rabius,
Kemaya Linton and
Raylen Russell teamed up to come in fifth with a time of 3:49.19. The HCU men's 4x400 team of
Charles Beckworth,
Mark Ngei,
Alex Piquart and
Denzel Hinds placed sixth, finishing in 3:13.55.
The HCU women finished sixth overall, tallying 54 points, with the men coming in seventh overall at 53 points.
