HOUSTON, Texas – Senior
Scott Boon secured a medal in the decathlon while sophomore
Destiny Quintanilla broke the program record in the steeplechase en route to a medal of her own on Friday at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Rice's Holloway Field.
Boon began the day with 766 points thanks to a time of 15.71 before a throw of 38.09m/125-0 added an additional 626 points. He then matched his PR in the pole vault, clearing a top height of 4.90m/16-1 for 880 points. Boon picked up 597 points with a throw of 50.59m/166-0 in javelin, the penultimate event of the decathlon, before closing things out by winning the 1,500 meters with a PR time of 4:24.48 for 781 points. He finished the decathlon with 7,555 points, just 47 points of his PR, to take the bronze medal. The medal marks the fourth SLC decathlon podium of his career, having earned one silver and a pair of golds in his career.
Sophomore
Destiny Quintanilla earned the bronze in the 3,000 meter steeplechase while breaking the school record in the event by 16 seconds with a time of 10:52.23. The previous record of 11:08.23 was set by Johanna Drews in 2021. In the men's long jump, freshman
Dadrian Calhoun leapt to a PR mark of 7.34m/24-1 to improve upon his previous best by more than a foot and pick up three points for the Huskies with a sixth-place finish.
In running prelims,
Jessica Rabius punched her ticket to the 800 meter finals by winning her heat in 2:14.97 while
Eline Mast qualified for tomorrow's final by winning her heat with a time of 2:15.56.
Krzysztof Turski moved on to tomorrow's final in the men's 800m, winning his heat with a time of 1:52.97. Freshman
Jessica Martini ran a PR time of 12.14 in the 100 meter dash to advance to Sunday's final.
HCU's freshmen duo of
Ashton Munoz-Nieves and
SJ Marais each earned a spot in the 110 meter hurdles finals with PR marks of 14.32 and 14.55, respectively.
Lanaye Keys earned her spot in the finals of the 100 meter hurdles, posting a time of 14.80.
The third, and final, day of the SLC Outdoor Championships kick off on Sunday, May 11, with the women's discus at 12:00 p.m.
