MGOLF: Huskies Finish Tied for 4th Place at Koasati Pines Intercollegiate

HCU claims best finish this spring, T-4; Caton tallied back-to-back top-10s with a T-8 finish.

KINDER, Louisiana – The Huskies concluded the 2024 Koasati Pines Intercollegiate in a tie for 4th place at four-over par. After back-to-back under par rounds of 287-283, HCU posted a final round 10-over par, 298, at Koasati Pines Country Club. The tie for 4th place is the best finish for the Huskies this spring season and ties the best finish for the 2023/2024 campaign after finishing in 4th place at the 2023 La Tour Intercollegiate in the fall season. The Huskies tallied 48 total birdies for the week and finished third in par-5 scoring average with a 4.70, 17-under par total for the tournament.

The Huskies were led by Ben Caton notching back-to-back top-10s, T-5 at The Big Texan, finishing in a tie for 8th place. After carding rounds of 70-72 on opening day, the senior extended his streak of par rounds or better to nine straight with a one-under par, 71, in the final round. The Scotland native now has six under-par rounds and has finished under-par in each of his last three starts with a three-under par finish. Leading the Huskies with 38 pars for the week, Caton started his final round at the 2nd hole and recorded 11 straight pars to open the round. After a bogey at the 13th hole, Caton recovered with back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th holes. A minor blemish at the 17th hole before bouncing back with a birdie at the 18th hole, Caton pared his last hole to post a one-under par, 71. Caton tied the tournament field lead in par-5 scoring average with a 4.42, seven-under par total for the week.

After back-to-back rounds of two-under par, 70, on opening day, Benjamin Dabos fired a final round three-over par, 75. The freshman recorded his best finish to-date by 26-places finishing in a tie for 13th place. The one-under par total for the week cleared the Argentinian's best finish by nine-shots after finishing eight-over par two-weeks ago at The Big Texan. Dabos led the Huskies tallying 13 total birdies for the week including two birdies in the final round with back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th holes. The pair of two-under par, 70s, on opening day is Dabos's lowest rounds of the season and the 13 total birdies for the tournament is the most birdies in a start in his young Husky' career.

With rounds of 73-70 on day one, Brooks Pawlak closed the week with a five-over par, 77, in the final round. The freshman lead the Huskies in par-3 scoring average with a 3.00, even-par for the tournament, and par-4 scoring average with a 4.03, one-over par for the week. After seven birdies on opening day including five birdies in the second round, the Kingwood native added three birdies in the final round at his second hole, the par4, 4th hole, and at the 10th and 1st holes, to finish with 10 birdies for the week. Pawlak recorded his second best finish of the spring campaign finishing in a tie for 27th place after finishing T-20 at the home tournament, the 2024 HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational, last month. The four-over par total is Pawlak's fourth best total in his rookie season.

Rounding out the Husky lineup, Mason Napier carded rounds of 74-73-75 to finish at six-over par for the week. The sophomore was one of 12 players in the 64-player field to record an eagle. After starting with a quadruple-bogey on his opening hole in the final round, the par-3, 5th hole, Napier bounced back with a birdie on his next hole, the par-4, 6th hole. A birdie at the 10th hole followed by three bogeys on the back nine, the Paris native reached the green in two-shots at the par-5, 18th hole, and rolled in an eagle putt to post an even-par back nine. Napier tallied eight birdies for the tournament en route to his best finish this spring, a tie for 34th place.

After rounds of two-over par, 74, and one-under par, 71, on opening day, Cooper New was disqualified from the final round after failing to sign his scorecard once the final round was completed. Therefore, the senior finished in 64th place totaling two rounds for the week.

Competing as an individual, Roy Barrera posted rounds of 75-71-78 to finish in a tie for 39th place at eight-over par. The sophomore tallied nine birdies for the tournament, all on opening day, including six birdies in the second round.

Southeastern Louisiana won the 2024 Koasati Pines Intercollegiate with rounds of 281-279-286 to finish at 18-under par for the tournament. SFA claimed second place at 15-under par, three-shots back, and ACU earned third place at eight-under par, 10-strokes back. SFA's Jaxon Griffith claimed the individual title after winning a playoff against Texas Southern's Liam O'Rourke. Both players posted eight-under par for the tournament clearing UNO's Matt Weber, SLU's Patrick Blaum, and SFA's Cameron Hubbard by two-shots, all finishing in a tie for 3rd place at six-under par.

The Huskies will return to action at the 2024 Southland Conference Championship at Comanche Trace Golf Club in Kerrville, Texas on April 22nd-24th.
