WBB: Huskies Sign Mariyah Brown to NLI

The Summer Creek High standout averaged a double-double as a senior

HOUSTON – HCU head women's basketball coach Donna Finnie announced the signing of Mariyah Brown to a National Letter of Intent to join the Huskies for the 2024-25 academic year.

A Houston native, Brown played her high school basketball at Summer Creek High School for coach Donny Ott. She led her Summer Creek team to a 35-4 record and a state semifinal appearance. Last season, as a senior, Brown averaged 11 points, 10 rebounds, 2.9 assists and a blocked shot per game en route to all-region honors.

"It has been an absolute honor and pleasure coaching Mariyah this year," said Ott. "She is such a joy to coach and the ultimate competitor who makes everyone around her better.  Mariyah is an efficient scorer in the paint and has a tenacious mentality when it comes to rebounding.  She is always willing to make the extra effort play or rebound to give her team the advantage.  Mariyah's grit and hustle will make her an asset to her future Huskie teammates!   She will do great things in the future and we will miss here at Summer Creek."

"Mariyah is one of those players who stands out due to her tenacity in every single moment of the game," added Finnie. "She has an eye for the ball off the glass and pursues it relentlessly and is someone who is willing to sacrifice her body for her team. Those players are rare now and it made Mariyah stand out to us in the recruiting process. Couple that with the fact she is an incredible person and teammate and she is extremely coachable, it was a no brainer for us to try encourage her to become a Husky. We are thrilled that Mariyah and her family will be in Sharp this fall!"

"I decided to be a Husky because of how well the coaching staff welcomed me from the beginning and showed how much they cared about me, not only as a player but as a person," said Brown. "I knew this was a team I would love to be a part of and do great things with in the future."
