BSB: Huskies Host Nicholls for Conference Series

HCU hosts the reigning SLC champs on Friday-Sunday at Husky Field

HOUSTON, Texas – The Huskies host the Colonels for a three-game conference series at Husky Field on Friday-Sunday. The Huskies are 11-17 all-time against Nicholls but are 6-3 vs the pre-season conference favorites at Husky Field since 2014. The Huskies won the last conference series at home against the Colonels in 2022 taking games two and three before getting swept by the league champs last year in Thibodaux. After starting conference play getting swept by league leading, Lamar, HCU has went 6-3 since, capturing the last three series against Southeastern, New Orleans, and Corpus Christi, 2-1.

The Huskies (13-22, 6-6 SLC) are led by Samuel Benjamin leading SLC play with seven home runs. The senior has tallied six home runs in the past six games including two mult-homer outings and has 12 multi-hit games in 35 starts this year. Benjamin leads the Huskies with a .326 batting average scoring 36 runs on the season while driving in 31 RBIs. Trevor Roper is coming off a great series against the Islanders going 6-for-9 in the final two games with a double, six runs and two RBIs. Tyler LaRue leads HCU with 34 RBIs and 11 doubles on the season notching hits in seven of the last eight conference games. Ty Hodge has been dealt a team-high 17 walks on the year and is riding a four-game hitting streak with one extra bagger and a trio of runs and RBIs in that stretch.

Parker Edwards leads the Huskies with 4 wins, claiming victories in his last three starts while tying the team-high with 33.1 innings pitched on the season. The senior has allowed just one earned run in his last three outings, tossing 17 frames while fanning five batters and dishing three walks. Jackson Hamilton earned his first win as a Husky in game one last weekend, tossing 3.2 shutout innings of relief with two strikeouts. The redshirt sophomore has recorded back-to-back scoreless appearances out of the bullpen allowing just two hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Christian Diaz leads the Huskies with a 3.27 ERA and a save, allowing just four earned runs in eight relief appearances on the year. The senior has tossed eight scoreless frames in 11 innings pitched this season.

The Colonels (24-14, 7-5 SLC) have the second best record in conference play but sit in third place in the conference standings being swept by New Orleans in the conference opening series. After sweeping Southeastern two weeks ago, Nicholls fell to Northwestern State last weekend, 1-2, and are coming off a midweek loss to Southern Mississippi on Tuesday. The Colonels lead the SLC with a .314 cumulative batting average led by conference leader Edgar Alvarez hitting .435 average with a 1.271 OPS on the season. Alvarez has tallied 15 doubles, 47 RBIs and 45 runs scored on the year. Parker Coddou leads the Southland scoring 48 runs on the season. Coddou is batting .307 average with 11 doubles, 24 walks, and 23 RBIs this year. Michael Quevedo leads Nicholls with a perfect 5-0 record while pitching a team-high 47.1 innings in nine starts. Quevedo has allowed just two home runs while fanning 51 batters to just 15 walks on the season. Also making nine starts this year, Jacob Myers is 2-0 while leading the Southland with 67 strikeouts, 27 strikeouts looking, 43 walks, and an opponent batting average of .143. Myers has given up a conference-low 22 hits for starting pitchers and has allowed four runs in each of his last two starts with 10 walks and 13 strikeouts over 8.1 frames.
