BSB: Huskies Clash with Islanders for Conference Series

HCU travels to Corpus Christi for three-game conferece weekend series at Chapman Field

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Huskies battle Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a three-game conference series on Friday-Sunday at Chapman Field. HCU is tied with the Islanders in the conference standings at 4-5, and the Huskies are 10-20 against Corpus Christi since 2008. HCU dropped last season's conference series at Husky Field, 2-1, but claimed the 2022 SLC series at Chapman Field claiming the final two games of the series. The Huskies have won the last two series against SLU and UNO the past two weekends, similarly, claiming the final two games after being run-ruled in the opening game of each series.

The Huskies (11-20, 4-5 SLC) have improved two spots up to seventh in the conference with a cumulative batting average of .263. Samuel Benjamin reclaimed his position leading the Huskies with a .319 batting average after going 4-for-10 (.400) against the Privateers last weekend with three home runs, 10 RBIs and five runs scored. Tyler LaRue is tied for the most home runs in the conference this season, tying Benjamin with eight homers on the season. Hitting .267 average on the year, the senior leads HCU with 31 RBIs on the year and is riding a six-game hitting streak which includes two home runs, a pair of doubles, seven RBIs and five runs scored. William Jewell is coming off back-to-back multi-hit games going 4-for-7 against UNO last week including a double and two runs, Jewell is hitting .295 average on the season with a team leading .404 on-base percentage. The Huskies starting pitching rotation is finding their stride. Parker Edwards (3-3) has notched wins in his last two starts pitching 10 innings allowing just two runs, one earned run, on five hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts. Rye Gunter (2-0) has also won his last two starts tallying seven total strikeouts. Gunter was flawless against SLU on March 30th tossing five scoreless frames with four strikeouts and a walk before his win against UNO last Sunday pitching five innings allowing two earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts. Nicholas Willard (2-3) has back-to-back shutout relief appearances tossing three shutout innings against Baylor with six strikeouts before pitching four scoreless innings against New Orleans with seven strikeouts.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (16-21, 4-5 SLC) are coming off a midweek loss to Rice after taking down Northwestern State with a 2-1 series victory last weekend. The Islanders are led by Issac Webb sitting fourth in the conference with a .376 batting average and leading the SLC with 56 hits on the year. Webb has tallied three hits in three of hist last four starts riding a four-game hitting streak. Former Husky, Sebastian Trinidad, is hitting .351 average with 25 RBIs, 19 runs and 10 doubles on the season. Zach Gracia (3-0) leads the starting pitcher rotation with a 3.94 ERA pitching 48 innings this season allowing a team high 53 hits with 41 strikeouts and 11 walks. Former Southland pitcher of the week, Riely Hunsaker (4-2) leads the Islanders with four wins giving up a team high eight home runs with 38 strikeouts and 15 walks.
