SB: Huskies host Lamar to launch Southland slate

HCU continues six-game homestand riding seven-game winning streak

HCU vs. LAMAR
HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University continues its six-game homestand this Saturday and Sunday with the first Southland series of the season against Lamar. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the series finale slated for Sunday afternoon. The series was previously scheduled for Friday and Saturday before being moved due to impending weather concerns.

HCU is currently 13-6 on the season and has won seven in a row following Tuesday's twin-killing of Penn at Husky Field. The Huskies won the opener 11-7 then took the nightcap 8-3 in the first-ever meeting with the Quakers.

The Huskies fell in a hole in the opener against Penn, as the Quakers jumped out to a 7-1 lead. 10 unanswered runs later, HCU held a four-run lead. Game two saw the home team get out in front first, putting up a three-spot in the first frame for a lead they wouldn't relinquish, and late inning trouble was squelched to preserve the doubleheader sweep.

Jasie Roberts went 4-7 with two runs, two doubles and four RBI over the two games. Tabitha Burnett was 3-7 with two RBI and Haylie Savage went 3-6 with her third homer, two RBI and five runs scored in the pair.

Lyndie Swanson picked up the win in relief in the opener, and Katy Janes recorded the victory in game two, with Addy Prasifka notching her first career save.

Offensively, HCU continues to be led by Jasie Roberts who is now batting .377 with a 1.054 OPS. She paces the team in hits with 20 and is tied with Haylie Savage for the team lead in RBI with 11. She is tied for second on the club with Kaicey Hagler, each with two homers.

In the doubleheader sweep of Penn, Roberts moved into a tie for 10th place all-time in at-bats (546) and hits (159) while pulling within two of the Top 10 in RBI. The senior from Deer Park is also closing in on career leaderboards in triples, walks, runs and games played.

Savage's dinger against Penn was her team-leading third of the season, and she is now batting .315 with a 1.075 OPS. She leads the squad in walks and runs scored and is second in hits. Juls Garcia upped her batting average to .293 while Maggie Childs is batting .279 and with 10 runs driven in is the third and final member of the trio of players with double-digit RBI.

Swanson and Janes are both now 4-1 on the season after wins on Tuesday against Penn, while Ronni Grofman is 3-2 with a 2.96 ERA. Swanson leads the club with a 2.21 ERA and along with Grofman and now Prasifka, gives the Huskies three hurlers with a save apiece. The last time HCU had three pitchers with a save in a season was 2019, when Jessica Patak (2), Elliott Estes (2) and Emma Guindon combined for five.

The save for Swanson puts her at three for her career, tied for the top spot all-time. The senior from Katy made her 50th career start at SFA, and has also moved over 400 career innings pitched, one of just nine hurlers in school history to eclipse that mark. She will hit the century mark in appearances the next time she steps in the circle.

HCU and Lamar have met 28 times, with the Cardinals holding a 20-8 lead in the series. The Huskies dropped two of three in Beaumont last season, sandwiching a 6-2 win between two one-run losses. The Redbirds are 12-7 on the season after clipping Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday 4-3 in Beaumont.

Lamar is led on the offensive side by Shenita Tucker, who is batting .417 on the season. Trinity Brandon is hitting .365 with two homers and 10 RBI, while Jayne Sepulveda is hitting .361 with a homer and team high 13 RBI.

In the circle, Emma Wardlaw is 4-2 with a 1.43 ERA and Karyana Mitchell is 5-0 with a 2.10 ERA and 28 K's in 29 innings pitched.
