SB: Huskies run winning streak to seven with sweep of Quakers

HCU continues homestand with first SLC series of season this weekend vs. Lamar

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University ran its winning streak to seven games by taking a twin-bill from University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday at Husky Field. The Huskies scored 10 unanswered runs in the opener to rally from a six-run deficit, then staved off the Quakers in game two to finish off the sweep.

With the pair of victories the Huskies have now won seven in a row and nine of their last 11 games. Now 13-6 overall, HCU will continue its six-game homestand this weekend with the first Southland series of the season against Lamar. A double-dip on Friday will be followed by the series finale on Saturday.

GAME ONE : HCU 11, Penn 7

The Huskies fell behind in the first inning of the opener on a sacrifice fly from Penn's Delaney Smith, but answered right back in identical fashion in the bottom of the frame when Kaicey Hagler hit her own sac-fly to drive in Juls Garcia and knot the game at one.

Four runs would come across for the Quakers in the second, aided by two errors from the Huskies to start the inning. Brianna Brown had a bases loaded walk, and Smith had the big blow of the inning, a two-run double down the left field line that gave Penn a 5-1 cushion. Two more would cross the plate in the third on a bases loaded pass to pinch-hitter Jade Montgomery and a RBI single through the left side by Megan Huang, giving Penn an 7-1 advantage.

Down 7-1, the Huskies went to work in the bottom of the third, as they would hang a snowman on the scoreboard. Haylie Savage led off the inning with a prodigious blast off the light pole in right field, her third homer of the season. Maggie Childs had an RBI single before Jackie Jessup reached on a sacrifice bunt and error to bring home Kaicey Hagler and cut the lead to two, 7-5.

Tabitha Burnett singled in Breana Herrera, cutting the lead to one and then Savage walked to load the bases. Juls Garcia came up with a seeing-eye single to short to score Riley Martin and knot the score at seven. Roberts would finish off the inning's festivities with a two-run double to right center, bringing in Savage and Burnett to cap the eight-run uprising and hand the Huskies a 9-7 lead.

HCU would tack on single runs in the fifth and sixth. Hagler scored on a throwing error in the second, and Savage provided an RBI single in the sixth to make the score 11-7 and finish things off.

Lyndie Swanson picked up the win in relief of Kynleigh Evans. The senior from Katy upped her record to 4-1 with 5.1 innings, scattering eight hits and two runs while fanning four.

The Huskies pounded out 13 hits, with five players having multi-hit outings. Savage, Juls Garcia, Maddy Bailey and Burnett would all go 2-4 while Jasie Roberts was 2-3. Savage drove in two and scored twice while Roberts drove in two and stole a base.

Delaney Smith went 1-3 with three RBI while Sammy Fenton was 3-4 with two runs scored for Penn. Kelly Zybura took the loss in relief, dropping her first decision of the season after giving up five runs, one earned and eight hits in 3.2 innings.

GAME TWO : HCU 8, Penn 3

In the nightcap, it was the Huskies jumping out to the quick lead, putting a three-spot on the board in the opening stanza. Haylie Savage walked to lead off the innings and Juls Garcia beat out an infield single to bring up Jasie Roberts, who hit her second two-run double of the afternoon. Roberts would later score on a throwing error to give HCU a 3-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Penn would get two runs back in the third as Megan Huang had an RBI double to right center. Brianna Brown would score on a passed ball later in the frame to cut the lead to one, 3-2. In the fifth, HCU got those runs back, taking advantage of an error on a fielder's choice that allowed Savage and Juls Garcia to score for a 5-3 lead.

In the sixth, HCU starter Katy Janes ran into some trouble. Penn would load the bases on a fielders choice and a couple of walks before Maia Hartley scored on a passed ball and Huang walked to load the bases again. Addy Prasifka would come on in relief and get Briana Brown on a comebacker to the circle to end the threat.

Prasifka would give up one hit in the seventh, but retired the side for her first career save and preserving a fourth victory on the season for Janes, who went 5.2 innings and allowed four hits and one unearned run.

Juls Garcia had a 3-4 second game, scoring three times for HCU, to lead an 11-hit offensive attack.

Jasie Roberts went 2-4 with two more RBI, drawing her to within two of the Top 10 on the all-time leaderboard for runs driven in. Her four hits in the twin-bill tie her for 10th for career hits with 159 and she also moved into a tie for all-time at-bats with 546 for her career.

Heidi Maytum collected her first two career hits and Haylie Savage also scored three times for HCU.

Brianna Brown and Sammy Fenton each went 2-4 in the losing effort for the Quakers, who fall to 2-8 overall.
