SB: Huskies clipped by Cardinals in both ends of twin-bill

Seven-game winning streak snapped; HCU looks to salvage series finale on Sunday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University had its seven-game winning streak snapped, as the Huskies dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Lamar University on Saturday afternoon.

HCU fell 2-1 in a pitcher's duel in game one, then saw the Cardinal bats explode for a 9-3 victory in the nightcap as the visitors from Beaumont took the first two games of the opening Southland series of the season.

HCU falls to 13-8 on the season while Lamar is now 14-7. The two teams will conclude the series with a Sunday afternoon matinee at Husky Field. First pitch is slated for 2 pm.

GAME 1: Lamar 2, HCU 1

Ronni Grofman and Lamar's Emma Wardlaw hooked up for a solid pitching duel in the opener. Both would work out of several jams in the game, as the two teams combined for 19 hits but just three runs.

Maddy Bailey put the Huskies on the board first in the bottom of the third inning, cranking a mammoth homer over the camera well in center field, her second of the season.

The Cardinals would respond in the fifth. Kayln Xayaseng had an infield single to start the inning, then stole second. Jayne Sepulveda would double to the gap in left center to tie the game at one, and she would later score on Cameron Niedenthal's single to left field, giving Lamar a 2-1 lead.

That would be enough, and Wardlaw was able to work out of trouble in three straight innings to hold onto the lead. The Huskies had chances, but weren't able to get the one big hit they needed, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth and stranding two more in the sixth.

Haylie Savage and Grofman led the offense, each going 2-4 while Bailey provided the only run for the Huskies with her second dinger of the season. Grofman scattered nine hits and fanned six while allowing just the two runs in falling to 3-3 on the season.

Niedenthal and Xayaseng each had two hits for the Cardinals to back Wardlaw, who went seven and struck out three while fending off a 10-hit offense to improve to 5-2 on the year.

GAME 2: Lamar 9, HCU 3

The Cardinals made sure there wouldn't be a pitcher's duel in game two, jumping on the scoreboard with a four-spot in the first frame. LU made goog on four hits and an HCU error to grab the big early lead, with the big blow being a two-run single by Veronica Harrison.

Another run would come across in the second before the Huskies could get on the board. Down 5-0 in the third, AB Garcia walked and stole second, then scored after a wicked hop single by Juls Garcia through the right side. Jasie Roberts would then chase Garcia home, as her sharp single went under the glove of the right fielder all the way to the wall, allowing Juls Garcia to score. Roberts was nabbed at the plate on the play, as the Huskies pulled to within 5-2.

The ladies from Spindletop would get those runs back in the top of the fourth on RBI singles by Trinity Brandon and Neidenthal. The Huskies would cut the lead to 7-3 in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by Roberts, but LU answered with another pair in the sixth off the bat of Veronica Harrison, whose double to left scored two, pushing the margin to 9-3.

Juls Garcia went 2-4 with an RBI and a run to lead the Huskies, who mustered just six hits off Lamar starter Karyana Mitchell. Roberts was 1-2 with an RBI, inching one run driven in of the all-time HCU Top 10 leaderboard.

Lyndie Swanson, making her 100th career appearance in the circle for HCU, was saddled with the defeat. She gave up seven hits and seven runs, five earned while walking one and striking out two as her record dipped to 4-2. Addy Prasifka pitched the final 3.1 innings, scattering seven hits and two runs, one earned.

Harrison went 2-4 with four RBI for Lamar to lead a 14-hit offensive attack. Shenita Tucker went 3-5 with two runs and a stolen base, while Brandon, Brooke Davis Kalie Amos and Xayaseng each had two hits.

Mitchell was stellar in running her record to 6-0 on the season. She allowed just the six hits and three runs, one earned and struck out eight.
