SB: Late Lamar rally dooms HCU in series finale

Huskies swept in opening SLC series by Cardinals; finish homestand Tuesday vs. UTA

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University dropped the final game of the opening Southland Conference series of the season, falling 4-3 to Lamar at Husky Field on Sunday. The Cardinals rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to claim the matinee finale and earn a sweep of the three-game series.

Lamar jumped out in front in the first inning, as Brooke Davis and Veronica Harrison each earned bases-loaded walks to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead.

In the third, the Huskies would put together a big inning, putting a three-spot on the board to take the lead. Maddy Bailey walked with one gone, and moved to third base on a single through the left side by Riley Martin. Martin moved to second on a groundout by AB Garcia, but Juls Garcia came through with a two-out triple to left field scoring both runners and tying things up. Haylie Savage then laced a double to right to score Juls Garca for a 3-2 HCU lead.

Ronni Grofman had come on in the second inning and proceeded to set down 15 of the next 19 batters she faced until the seventh. With one out and one on, the Cardinals took advantage to two consecutive errors to load the bases. Harrison would then lift a single to left to score two and give Lamar the lead back for good, 4-3.

HCU had just six hits, with Juls Garcia driving in two runs and Savage one. Grofman took the hard-luck defeat, going six strong innings and allowing just four hits and two unearned runs while fanning six as she falls to 3-4 on the year.

Karyana Mitchell picked up her second win of the series, going four innings of two-hit, five-K relief of Emma Wardlaw. Harrison went 2-3 with three RBI and Jayne Sepulveda had the other two hits for the Cardinals, who improve to 15-7 overall and 3-0 in the Southland.

The Huskies fall to 13-9 overall and 0-3 in the SLC. HCU will finish off the six-game homestand when it hosts UT-Arlington on Tuesday afternoon, with first pitch set for 5 pm at Husky Field.
