BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The men's distance medley relay ended the day with a gold while senior
Justice Artisst set a new program record in the 5,000 meters and
Scott Boon stands in first at the end of four events in the heptathlon to lead the HCU men's and women's track & Field programs after the first day of the 2024 Southland Conference Indoor Championships.
In the last event of the day, the Huskies' men's DMR team of
Krzysztof Turski,
Mark Ngei,
Albin Wallenius and
Alex Piquart raced to a first-place finish with a time of 9:59.47 to take gold by more than two seconds. Earlier in the day, Artisst made a strong push at the end of the 5000m to finish less than a second behind the winner, placing third, and broke the previous school record by more than 14 seconds with a mark of 14:33.92.
In the heptathlon, Boon stands in first place through four events with a point total of 2,983. He opened with a time of 7.25 in the 60 meter dash to pick up 796 points. He then added 828 points with the top long jump mark of the multis, 7.06m/23-2.0, before posting a top mark of 12.79m/41-11.50 in the shot put for 654 points. He wrapped up the day by clearing 1.89m/6-2.25 in the high jump to tack on 705 more points.
Turski, in addition to running on the gold medal DMR squad, won his heat in the 800 meters with a PR time of 1:51.87 for the fastest time of the day to move on to the finals. Two other members of the DMR team, Piquart and Wallenius, also advanced to tomorrow's finals in the men's mile with Piquart ranking fourth among runners with a time of 4:18.04 while Wallenius advanced with a time of 4:19.59.
Destiny Quintanilla advanced in the women's mile, ranking fourth on the day with a time of 5:06.97while in the men's 400 meters,
Denzel Hinds moved on with a mark of 49.25. In the 60h,
Brianna Hinds moved on to the finals with a PR time of 8.89 and on the men's side, both
SJ Marais and
Ashton Munoz-Nieves each advanced with times of 8.35 and 8.43, respectively.
Day two of the SLC Indoor Championships begin on Monday, Feb. 26, at 9:00 a.m.
