SB: Huskies begin busy stretch with mid-week at No. 2 Texas

HCU begins six-game homestand on Thursday, including Husky Classic over weekend

HCU at No. 2 TEXAS
Houston Christian University begins a busy stretch of action when it travels to Austin on Wednesday for a match with No. 2 ranked University of Texas Red and Charlene McCombs Field. It will be the first of six games over the next seven days and includes the home opener on Thursday.

The Huskies are even at 4-4 after two weekends at two tournaments. A 2-1 showing at the Stinger Classic in Montomery, Alabama to open the campaign was followed by a 2-3 mark at the ACU Tournament in Abilene this past weekend. HCU claimed wins over Marist on Friday and New Mexico on Saturday, while dropping a rematch with Marist Saturday and two games to the host Wildcats.

Jasie Roberts was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week after her weekend in Abilene. The senior catcher batted .615 with a homer, two triples and five RBI to claim her first career weekly honor. She currently lead the Huskies in hitting with a .478 average and is tied for second on the club with her five runs driven in.

Keely Castillo has had a nice opening to her Husky career, as the UT-Tyler transfer is batting .438 with two doubles and three RBI. Jackie Jessup is also batting .400, with five doubles, five runs and three RBI.

AB Garcia and Haylie Savage, HCU's two Southland Conference preseason first-team selections, check in at .387 and .381. Garcia leads the Huskies with 12 hits and six stolen bases, moving into eight-place all-time in swipes. She hit her first career homer in the win over Marist on Friday, an inside-the-parker at that. Savage hit her first dinger of the season in Sunday's loss to ACU, and leads HCU with six RBI through eight games.

In the circle, Ronni Grofman sits at front of the staff in the early going. She has posted a 2-0 mark and 1.50 ERA in two complete game efforts, striking out nine. Lyndie Swanson and Katy Janes each are 1-1 on the season. Swanson's win came on opening night with 6.2 innings of sterling relief, while Janes set a career-best with 11 strikeouts in her victory over Marist.

The Huskies and Longhorns have met just twice with UT winning 5-0 in 2013 and 8-0 in 2019. Texas moved up from third to second in this week's ESPN/NFCA Top 25 poll released on Monday. They won their only two games last week at the Shriner's Childrens Clearwater Invitational, defeating then No. 2 Tennessee 2-1 before a 9-2 victory over No. 9 Stanford.

Reese Atwood leads the offensive attack for the Horns, batting a team-best .619 while pacing the club in homers (4) and RBI (15). Viviana Martinez has 10 RBI, and joins Atwood as one of eight players with a homer already this season, four with two or more. Citlaly Gutierrez and Teagen Kavan headline the hurlers; Gutierrez at 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA and Kavan at 3-0 with a 3.23 and team-high 18 K's in 13 innings.

After the game in Austin, HCU returns home for the first time this season to begin a five-game homestand, starting with a Thursday afternoon matchup with University of North Dakota. The Husky Classic follows Friday-Sunday with HCU sandwiching a game with Prairie View A&M between two contests against Missouri-Kansas City.
