HOUSTON – This Saturday afternoon marks the beginning of Southland Conference play for the HCU women's basketball team with the Huskies hosting East Texas A&M in Sharp Gym at 1:00 p.m.
HCU (2-5, 0-0 SLC) has won two of its three home games so far this season, defeating Utah Tech and Southwestern while falling to Tarleton State. Most recently, the Huskies fell, 93-39, in a road matchup against Oklahoma State.
Senior forward
Tiffany Tullis continues to pace the Huskies and lead the Southland Conference in rebounding, averaging 10.3 rebounds per game while her nine defensive rebounds per game lead the nation. The senior has led the Huskies in rebounding in four of the six games she's played in. Junior
Jo Oly is currently second on the team in rebounding and scoring, averaging an identical 7.2 points and rebounds per game.
East Texas A&M (3-6, 0-0 SLC) comes into Saturday's contest having dropped its last three games. Most recently, the Lions fell on the road to former SLC member Abilene Christian, 74-59. The Lions' last win came in Houston, an 87-86 overtime victory against Texas Southern on Nov. 21.
The Lions offense is powered by guards Jordyn Newsome and Cora Horvath with the duo attempting higher than 40 percent of the team's field goals so far this season. Newsome is averaging 16.9 ppg to lead all SLC players while Horvath checks in at fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 14.7 ppg. Junior Alva Hedrich leads ETAMU on the boards, pulling down seven per game.
East Texas A&M has won all four previous meetings over the Huskies.
HCU remains at home next week, hosting St. Thomas on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 6:00 p.m. before taking on Sam Houston on Friday, Dec. 20, at 1:00 p.m.
