FORT WORTH, Texas – HCU women's basketball opens year 12 under
Donna Finnie this Tuesday evening inside Schollmaier Arena on the campus of TCU, facing the Horned Frogs at 6:30 p.m.
Finnie and the Huskies are looking to improve on last season's 6-23 record with a mix of transfers expected to make an impact along with some key returners from last year's roster. Senior
Amy Cotton is back after missing the final 17 games of last season due to injury. Cotton averaged 5.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in her 12 games played In her last four games before her injury she was averaging 10 ppg and 6.5 rpg, scoring a career-high 12 points at Kansas and posting an eight-point, 10-rebound effort in a road win at Wichita State.
Erin Maguire returns for her redshirt sophomore season after starting five games last year and appearing in 26. The Belfast native averaged 5.2 ppg last year, scoring a career-best 17 points twice in Southland Conference play. Sophomore
Makolla Bagayegou finished last season strong, seeing her role increase and averaging eight points per game over the final four games.
Tove Caesar, also a sophomore, was the team's most accurate three-point threat last year as a freshman, connecting on 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from behind the arc.
Also returning are juniors
Jo Oly and
Yasmin Butler, a duo that combined for 57 blocked shots last season.
Hannah Fields started 16 games as a freshman last season, averaging 3.2 ppg and 3.0 rpg.
Lyric Barr saw limited action but put up a career-high 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting in the season finale at Lamar.
Finnie brought in three Division I transfers in seniors
Tiffany Tullis and
Kierra Prim along with junior
Victoria Dixon. Tullis averaged 7.5 ppg and 6.6 rebounds last season at Texas State after earning junior college all-American honors at Blinn College, setting the Blinn records for single-season and career rebounds. Prim spent the last two seasons at Central Arkansas, starting 30 of 49 games she played in and averaging 6.1 ppg and 5.1 rpg. Dixon, meanwhile, averaged 5.8 ppg at Alabama A&M primarily coming off the bench.
The Huskies also have a trio of freshman on the roster, guard
Madelyne Davis, forward
Mariyah Brown and forward
Kendall Beck.
TCU received votes in both the AP and WBCA Coaches preseason polls, finishing just outside the top 25. The Horned Frogs were picked fourth in the Big 12 Coaches Poll a year after posting a 21-12 overall record and a 6-12 mark in conference play.
The Horned Frogs return their top three scorers from last season, including seniors Sedona Prince and Madison Conner. Those two each averaged better than 19 ppg last year with Conner connecting on 38.6 percent (100-of-259) from behind the arc while Prince shot 55.2 percent (158-of-286) from the floor and also pulled down 9.7 rpg. Agnes Emma-Nnopu was also a threat from deep last season, shooting 36.8 percent (60-of-163) from deep while averaging 10.7 ppg and 7.2 rpg.
TCU also added one of the offseason's most prized transfers in senior guard Hailey Van Lith. Van Lith enters her final collegiate season with 1,936 points, 524 rebounds, 375 assists and 176 steals for her career.
The Huskies will remain on the road to face another Big 12 opponent on Thursday, Nov. 7, when they face Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas at 6:00 p.m.
