HOUSTON – HCU and Lamar are set to face off in a Southland Conference women's basketball matchup this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. inside Sharp Gym with both teams coming off a conference loss on Thursday.
 
On Thursday evening, the Huskies (5-11, 0-5 SLC) fell in a 57-48 decision at home to New Orleans while Lamar (10-5, 4-1 SLC) suffered a 73-70 home loss to Texas A&M-Commerce.
 
In its loss to UNO, HCU got a 10-point, four block performance from sophomore center Yasmin Butler in her first career start. Butler has seen significant minutes the last two games, averaging seven points, six rebounds and 4.5 blocked shots in 52 minutes on the floor. Junior Enya Maguire led the Huskies with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting in the loss, connecting on 3-of-8 from behind the arc.
 
As a team, HCU leads the Southland Conference with 4.25 blocked shots per game over the course of the season, raising that to 4.8 bpg in league play. Four times this season the Huskies have recorded at least six blocks in a game, including the last two games in which HCU has totaled 19 blocked shots. Nationally, HCU ranks 57th among 348 Division I teams in blocks per game.
 
Lamar's loss to TAMUC on Thursday snapped a five-game winning streak and handed the Cardinals their first home loss of the year. Lamar trailed 40-28 at the half before fighting back to briefly grab a 65-64 lead with just under three minutes to play. The Lions then went on a 9-3 run to put the game out of reach before a last second layup by LU. Junior forward Akasha Davis led Lamar with a double-double of 21 points and 18 rebounds.
 
Davis is averaging a double-double in conference play with 17.6 points per game and 13.4 rebounds per game while her season numbers stand at 14.8 ppg and 9.4 rpg. Senior Sabria Dean, three-time SLC Player of the Week this season, leads the Cardinals with 15.3 ppg.
 
HCU's current three-game homestand ends on Thursday, Jan. 25 with a visit from defending SLC champion Southeastern.
