HOUSTON – Alex Piquart's victory in the men's one-mile run highlighted the HCU men's and women's showing as the Huskies opened the 2024 indoor season Friday at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational at Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Piquart, a senior, paced the field with a time of 4:13.84 to mark HCU's first victory of the event. Not far behind, junior Krzysztof Turski crossed the line 6th in the same event with a time of 4:16.55. In the men's 400m run, sophomore Denzel Hines put together a top-five finish with a time of 50.05.
In the women's 3000 meter run, senior Destiny Quintanilla finished 10th with a time of 10:19.60. In the same event on the men's side, freshman Albin Wallenius came in 9th at 8:45.30.
In the field events, HCU's most solid showing came in the triple jump, where freshman Joshua Gillis-Harry placed second with a distance of 14.97 meters, finishing only behind Jaden Harris, who ran unattached, at 15.46 meters. A pair of HCU sophomores, Jasiah Vaquera and Winjaris Windster, finished 7th and 8th respectively.
Elsewhere, Freshman Dadrian Calhoun recorded a 9th place finish with a jump of 6.90 meters in the men's long jump. Senior Scott Boon tied for 7th in the men's pole vault with a distance of 4.48 meters. In the women's 4x400 meter relay, HCU finished 6th out of 18 teams with a time of 3:58.73.
The Huskies' next meet will be in two weeks on Friday, Jan. 26, when they head back to Yeoman Fieldhouse for the Robert Platt Invitational.
