BLACKSBURG, Va. – HCU women's basketball, coming off a 79-49 home win over St. Thomas on Tuesday, are set for a road matchup against No. 9 Virginia Tech at Cassell Coliseum on Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m. CT.
HCU (1-2) picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday vs. crosstown opponent St. Thomas after dropping the first two games of the season on the road. Freshman
Tove Caesar led the Huskies with 12 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor and hitting 2-of-3 from three-point range. Senior point guard
Kennedy Wilson finished with 11 points while dishing out six assists and pulling down four rebounds.
N'Denasija Collins and
Jo Oly each scored 10 points while
Elizabeth Matadi recorded a career-high eight rebounds.
Junior
Enya Maguire is leading the Huskies in scoring through three games, averaging 11 points per game while also adding five rebounds per game. Wilson is averaging 10.3 ppg and leads the team with 12 assists. Collins is averaging a team-best six rpg.
The Hokies (1-1) opened the season with a 94-55 home win over High Point before dropping a tightly-contested matchup to No. 3 Iowa on a neutral floor, 80-76. Virginia Tech's duo of Georgia Amoore and Elizabeth Kitley, both preseason Naismith Women's Player of the Year Watchlist honorees, combined for 47 points with Amoore pouring in 31 in the loss. For the season, Amoore is averaging 22.5 ppg and shooting 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from three while Kitley is scoring 21.5 ppg and averaging 13.5 rpg.
Thursday's matchup will be the first vs. a top-10 opponent for HCU since the 2019-20 season when the Huskies took on No. 2 Baylor in Waco. It will also be the Huskies' first-ever game vs. the Hokies.
Following Thursday's game, HCU will make the much shorter trip to Bryan-College Station, Texas to take on Texas A&M in Reed Arena at 7:00 p.m.
